Introduction

If there is one place in Malta that transports us directly to a fairy tale, or rather, to a movie, it is undoubtedly Anchor Bay Beach, best known for being the location of the picturesque Popeye Village. Forget conventional beaches; here, the experience goes far beyond a simple swim. We are faced with a small, sheltered cove of turquoise waters, nestled in a stunning rocky setting, whose main attraction is a fishing village originally built as a filming set for the 1980 movie 'Popeye', starring Robin Williams.

From the moment we set foot in its surroundings, magic envelops us. The colorful wooden houses, the piers and the boats, everything seems taken from a postcard. Anchor Bay Beach (Popeye Village) is not just a place to sunbathe; it is a destination that combines the fun of a theme park with the natural beauty of the Maltese coast. It is a place where imagination soars freely and where every corner offers an opportunity to create unforgettable memories, especially if we are traveling with children. It is certainly one of the most unique and memorable Mellieħa beaches we can visit.

How to Get to Anchor Bay Beach (Popeye Village)

Getting to Anchor Bay Beach (Popeye Village) is relatively straightforward, although it requires a bit of planning depending on our starting point in Malta. The village is located on the northwest coast of the island, near the town of Mellieħa.

By Car

If we have rented a car, which is a highly recommended option for exploring Malta at our own pace, the route is quite direct. From the capital, Valletta, or from Malta International Airport (MLA), we must take the main roads heading north towards Mellieħa. Once in Mellieħa, there are clear signs indicating 'Popeye Village'. The journey from Valletta or the airport usually takes between 40 and 50 minutes, depending on traffic. Popeye Village has a large free parking lot, which is a great advantage.

By Bus

Public transport in Malta is efficient and economical. Several bus lines can take us to the vicinity of Anchor Bay. Line 101, which connects Cirkewwa (the port for ferries to Gozo and Comino) with Golden Bay, has a specific stop for Popeye Village. We can also take buses to Mellieħa (such as lines 41, 42, 49, 221, 222) and from there, take a taxi or a shuttle bus if available, or even walk if we feel energetic (approximately 30-40 minutes). It is important to check the updated schedules of Malta Public Transport before planning our trip.

Organized Tours

Many tour operators offer day trips to Popeye Village, often combined with other nearby attractions. This can be a convenient option if we prefer not to worry about transport or if we are traveling in a group. We, personally, prefer the freedom of going on our own, but we understand that tours have their charm.

The Sand and Water

Anchor Bay Beach is a small, intimate, and charming cove. Let's not expect a vast expanse of golden sand, as the main beach is of a mixed type, with a combination of fine sand and some areas of pebbles and rocks. This type of terrain is quite common on Malta beaches and gives it a more natural and wild character compared to large tourist beaches. However, the bathing area is pleasant and comfortable for swimmers.

What really stands out here are the waters. They are extraordinarily crystal clear and calm, with shades ranging from turquoise blue to emerald green, inviting a refreshing dip. The bay is well protected from wind and currents, making it ideal for swimming, even for the little ones. The entrance to the sea is gentle and gradual in the sandy area, which is perfect for families. The underwater visibility is excellent, making it a perfect spot for snorkeling, where we can observe local marine life among the rocks and seaweed.

Although the beach area is limited in size (about 80 meters in length), its location within Popeye Village adds a special appeal. We can alternate playing on the sand with exploring the village, which makes a day here much more dynamic and entertaining than at a traditional beach. It is a unique experience that combines the charm of a Mediterranean cove with the fantasy of a movie set.

Since Anchor Bay Beach is located within the Popeye Village complex, the available facilities and services are exceptionally complete and very well thought out for visitors. We will not lack anything here to spend a comfortable and fun day.

Inside Popeye Village

• Restaurants and Chiringuitos: There are several options for eating and drinking, from restaurants offering full menus to small chiringuito stalls with snacks, ice cream, and refreshing drinks. We can enjoy a meal with views of the sea and the village, which adds a magical touch to the experience.
• Sunbeds and Umbrellas: The beach area has sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent, allowing us to relax comfortably under the Maltese sun. It is advisable to arrive early in the high season to secure a good spot.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: The facilities are modern and well-maintained, with showers to rinse off the salt and sand after swimming, and clean, accessible toilets/WC.
• Lifeguards: During the bathing season, there are lifeguards monitoring the beach area, which provides additional peace of mind, especially if traveling with children.
