How to Get to Playa de Ħondoq ir-Rummien

Getting to Playa de Ħondoq ir-Rummien is part of the adventure of exploring Gozo. First, if you're coming from the main island of Malta, you'll need to take a ferry from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr, Gozo's main port. The ferries operate very frequently, making this roughly 25-minute journey a scenic and pleasant part of the trip. Once in Gozo, the options for getting to Ħondoq are varied and depend on our preferences.

By Car

For us, the most comfortable and flexible way to get there is by car. Renting a car in Gozo allows us to explore the island at our own pace and easily access coves like Ħondoq. From Mġarr, we simply follow the signs to the village of Il-Qala. Once in Il-Qala, there are signs guiding us towards the coast and the beach. The road is picturesque, winding through fields and traditional houses. Upon arriving at the beach, we find a free parking area right next to it, although in the summer months, especially on weekends, it can fill up quickly. We advise arriving early to secure a good spot.

By Public Transport

If we prefer not to drive, public transport in Gozo is an option, though it requires a bit more planning. There are bus lines connecting Mġarr with Il-Qala. From the center of Il-Qala, Playa de Ħondoq ir-Rummien is within walking distance, although it can be a somewhat steep downhill walk and then uphill on the return, especially under the Maltese sun. We recommend checking bus schedules, as they may be less frequent than in Malta. It's a more economical option, but we sacrifice some comfort and speed.

From Mġarr or any other part of the island, a taxi will take us directly to the beach without complications. It's a good option if we're traveling in a group and can share the cost, or if we simply want maximum comfort without worrying about parking. This mixed characteristic is ideal for sitting or lying down, as the pebbles help keep the sand in place and prevent it from sticking excessively to the skin. For the more sensitive, water shoes can be useful, especially when entering and exiting the water, although many enjoy the natural feeling under their feet. What truly fascinates us about Ħondoq is how this seabed composition contributes to the transparency of its waters. With no large amount of fine sand to be easily stirred up, the sea remains incredibly clear and pristine, offering exceptional visibility.

The waters of Ħondoq ir-Rummien are simply spectacular. Their turquoise and crystalline hue is almost unreal, inviting us to dive in immediately. They are calm waters, sheltered from strong currents, making them a safe and pleasant place to swim, even for the youngest in the family. The entry into the sea is gradual, with a shallow area near the shore that is perfect for children to splash and play in complete safety. As we go further in, the depth increases gently, revealing a vibrant underwater world.

The clarity of the water makes Ħondoq a paradise for snorkeling. With just a mask and a snorkel, we can explore a fascinating marine ecosystem: small colorful fish, waving seaweed, and underwater rock formations that harbor rich biodiversity.
