Introduction
Welcome, nature and beach paradise lovers! Today we embark on a virtual journey to one of the best-kept treasures of the Zante beaches: Playa de Marathonisi, world-renowned as 'Turtle Island'. Located in the stunning Laganas Bay, on the south coast of Zante (Zakynthos), Greece, this small uninhabited island is much more than just a beach destination; it is a natural sanctuary, a symbol of conservation, and a place where the wild beauty of Greek nature is displayed in all its splendor.
Marathonisi is home to the iconic loggerhead turtle, the Caretta Caretta, an endangered species that chooses its soft sands to nest year after year. This grants it a special status as part of the Zakynthos National Marine Park, meaning its pristine environment is strictly protected. When we visit Playa de Marathonisi, we are not just seeking sun and sea, but also an experience of deep connection with wildlife and absolute respect for the delicate balance of this ecosystem. Get ready to immerse yourselves in a story that will transport you to its turquoise waters, golden sands, and the unmatched charm of this corner of the Mediterranean.
How to Get to Playa de Marathonisi (Turtle Island)
Playa de Marathonisi is an island, so access is exclusively by sea. This, far from being an inconvenience, adds a touch of adventure and exclusivity to the visit. There are no bridges or regular ferries, which helps maintain its pristine and protected environment.
Maritime Transport Options
- Organized boat tours: This is the most popular and simple way to get there. Numerous companies offer daily tours from various points on the island of Zante, especially from Laganas, Limni Keriou (Keri Port), and Agios Sostis. These tours usually include stops for swimming and snorkeling at Marathonisi, as well as visits to the nearby Keri Caves. The boats are varied, from large tourist vessels to small glass-bottom boats, ideal for observing marine life without disturbing it.
- Private boat rental: For those seeking more freedom and privacy, renting a small boat (often without needing a license, depending on the engine size) is an excellent option. There are rental points in Laganas, Limni Keriou, and Agios Sostis. This allows us to explore the island at our own pace, anchor in more secluded coves, and enjoy the tranquility of Marathonisi for longer. It is crucial to inquire about the protected nesting areas and access restrictions so as not to disturb the turtles.
- Water taxis: An intermediate option between an organized tour and private rental. They are smaller vessels that take us directly to the island and pick us up at an agreed time, offering flexibility without the responsibility of captaining a boat.
The Sand and the Water
When stepping onto Playa de Marathonisi, the first thing that captivates us is the quality of its sand and the transparency of its waters. It is a sensory experience that completely envelops us and makes us understand why the Caretta Caretta turtles choose this place for their nesting ritual.
The Sand: A Golden and Soft Mantle
The sand of Marathonisi is fine, of a pale golden color that contrasts wonderfully with the turquoise blue of the sea. It is incredibly soft under our feet, inviting us to walk barefoot and feel each grain between our toes. Given its status as a protected nesting area, the beach is maintained in its most natural state, free of artificial structures that alter its delicate ecosystem. Here, the 'ground' is pure sand, without rocks or pebbles to hinder walking or comfort.
The Water: A Spectacle of Crystals and Blues
The waters bathing Playa de Marathonisi are, without exaggeration, of astonishing beauty. They are crystal clear, allowing us to see the seabed with exceptional clarity, even at several meters depth. The color of the sea varies from a vibrant sky blue to an emerald turquoise, creating a mosaic of hues that hypnotizes us. The water temperature is generally warm during the summer months, making every dip a refreshing delight.
Furthermore, the waters are notably calm and shallow near the shore, making it an ideal place for swimming and for children to play safely. The absence of strong currents and perfect visibility make Marathonisi a paradise for snorkeling. We can spend hours exploring marine life, observing small fish, sea urchins, and, with luck and respect, glimpsing a loggerhead turtle swimming in its natural habitat. It is an experience that connects us directly with the pure essence of the Greek Mediterranean.
Services and Facilities
While Playa de Marathonisi is a dream destination, it is crucial to understand that its charm lies precisely in its natural and protected state. As part of the Zakynthos National Marine Park and as a vital nesting site for the Caretta Caretta turtle, the island is uninhabited and lacks most of the services and facilities we might expect to find on other, more commercialized Zante beaches.
The Beauty of the Absence of Services
At Marathonisi, we will not find chiringuitos, restaurants, shops renting umbrellas and sunbeds, showers, public toilets, or parking. In fact, there are no permanent buildings on the island. This intentional absence is part of its co
