How to Get to Makryammos Beach

Getting to Makryammos Beach is relatively straightforward, making it an accessible destination for most travelers. The island of Thassos does not have its own airport, so the first step is to fly to Kavala International Airport (KVA) on the Greek mainland. From there, the journey continues by ferry.

From Kavala to Thassos

Once in Kavala, we will head to the port to take a ferry. There are two main routes:

• Kavala to Skala Prinos: This route is longer (approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes), but can be convenient if we are staying on the west side of the island.
• Keramoti to Limenas (Thassos Town): This is the most popular and fastest route (about 35-40 minutes). The port of Keramoti is very close to Kavala airport, making the connection easy. We always recommend this option for its efficiency.

From Limenas to Makryammos

Makryammos Beach is located just about 2 kilometers east of Limenas, the capital and main port of Thassos. Once we disembark from the ferry in Limenas, we have several options to get to the beach:

• Rental car: This is the most comfortable option, especially if we plan to explore the island. The journey is short and well-signposted.
• Taxi: Taxis are available at the port of Limenas and will take us directly to the entrance of the Makryammos resort in just a few minutes.
• Walking: For the more adventurous, it is possible to walk from Limenas. The walk is pleasant, though uphill in some sections, and offers nice views of the coastal landscape. However, it can be hot during the summer months, so we recommend bringing water and sun protection.

The Sand and the Water

Makryammos Beach captivates us from the first moment with its stunning combination of sand and sea. We consider it a perfect example of an ideal Mediterranean beach, and here's why:

The Sand

The sand at Makryammos is fine and of a beautiful golden color. Walking barefoot, we notice its softness, making it extremely pleasant for strolling, building sandcastles, or simply lying down to sunbathe. It is a very clean and well-maintained beach, where the sand is always cared for, free of stones or debris that could be bothersome. This feature is especially appreciated by families, as children can play with complete freedom and safety.

The Water

Undoubtedly, one of the biggest attractions of Makryammos is its waters. They are famous for being crystal clear and of a vibrant turquoise color that irresistibly invites you for a swim. The underwater visibility is exceptional, making it an excellent place for snorkeling and observing marine life. We have enjoyed hours exploring its shallow seabed, teeming with small fish and some rocks covered in seaweed.

In addition to its clarity, the waters of Makryammos are notably calm and shallow near the shore. This makes it an extremely safe place for young children, who can splash and play without risks. The gentle slope of the seabed allows bathers to wade in gradually, adding an extra level of comfort and safety. The water temperature, especially during the summer months, is very pleasant, offering a refreshing relief from the heat of the sun.

The natural surroundings of the beach, with dense pine forests that almost reach the shoreline, help create a cool and shaded atmosphere in some areas, mitigating the heat and offering a spectacular visual contrast with the blue tones of the sea. The combination of fine sand, calm and clear waters, and a well-preserved natural environment makes Makryammos Beach a true paradise for lovers of the sea and tranquility.
