How to Get to Playa de Pefkos

Getting to Playa de Pefkos is part of the adventure and charm of discovering Skyros. The island, although well-connected, maintains an air of exclusivity that makes it even more attractive. For most travelers, the first step will be to reach the island of Skyros. We opted for the ferry from Kymi, in Euboea, a sea crossing that immerses us in the island atmosphere from the start. It's also possible to fly directly to Skyros Airport from Athens, a faster option for those with less time.

Once on Skyros, Playa de Pefkos is located on the southwest coast, a short distance from Chora, the island's capital. We highly recommend renting a car or a scooter to explore Skyros at our own pace. The roads are generally good and allow us to access hidden coves and spectacular viewpoints that public transport doesn't reach. From Chora, the journey to Pefkos takes about 15-20 minutes by car, a picturesque route that gifts us panoramic views of the island and the Aegean Sea.

There are also local bus options connecting Chora with some of the main beaches, although the frequency can be limited, especially outside the high season. If we prefer not to drive, we can ask at our accommodation about bus schedules or consider a taxi, which offers more flexibility. However, for a complete experience and the freedom to move as we please, a rental vehicle is our preferred option for exploring Playa de Pefkos and its surroundings.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Pefkos, the quality of its sand and the purity of its waters are undoubtedly two of its greatest attractions. As we approach, we immediately notice the golden color of its sand, which gently stretches along the coast. It's a fine sand, almost velvety to the touch, perfect for walking barefoot, building sandcastles, or simply lying down and feeling its warmth under the sun. Unlike other beaches in Greece that may have pebbles or rocks, Pefkos offers us a comfortable and pleasant surface along its entire length.

But it's in the water where Playa de Pefkos truly wins us over. Its waters are a translucent turquoise blue, so clear that we can see the seabed with total clarity. The bay in which the beach is located protects it from strong winds, resulting in an exceptionally calm sea, almost like a natural pool. This characteristic makes it an ideal place for swimming and snorkeling, even for the little ones or for those who don't feel very confident in rough waters. The entry into the sea is gradual, making it very safe for children, who can play at the shore without worries. We love diving into these refreshing waters and feeling the softness of the sandy bottom under our feet. It is, without exaggeration, one of the most pleasant bathing experiences we've had on the beaches of Skyros.

Despite its tranquil and natural atmosphere, Playa de Pefkos is organized enough to offer us the necessary comforts for a perfect day under the sun. It's not a massified beach with an infinity of services, but rather maintains a perfect balance between the natural and the practical. We greatly appreciate this approach, as it allows us to enjoy the intrinsic beauty of the place without giving up certain conveniences.

One of the most valued services are the sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent. This allows us to relax comfortably without having to carry our own equipment. We love the feeling of lying under the shade of an umbrella, with the sea breeze caressing us and the sound of the waves in the background. Furthermore, the beach has at least one chiringuito or a traditional taverna located right on the sand or very close by. Here we can enjoy refreshing drinks, Greek coffees, and, even better, delicious dishes of local cuisine, from fresh fish to Greek salads. It's the perfect place for a light lunch or a snack while contemplating the sea.

For those arriving by car, finding parking is relatively easy, with spaces available in the vicinity of the beach. And after a refreshing swim in the Aegean, it's always a pleasure to be able to use the showers to wash off the salt and sand before returning to our accommodation or continuing to explore the island.
