Today we delve into the heart of the Aegean, on the charming island of Skyros, to discover one of its most precious jewels: Playa de Agios Petros. If you are looking for a destination that combines the serenity of nature with Greek authenticity, you have come to the right place. This beach, often praised for its pristine beauty, is a true sanctuary for the soul, a canvas of blues and golds that invites disconnection and pure enjoyment.
Playa de Agios Petros is not just a place to sunbathe; it is an experience. From the moment your feet touch its soft sand, you will feel an instant connection with the calm emanating from this corner of Greece. Its waters, so transparent they easily reveal the seabed, are a constant invitation to dive in and leave worries behind. It is the kind of beach that stays etched in your memory, a vivid recollection of the untamed beauty of the Mediterranean. For us, it is an essential destination on any itinerary of the beaches of Skyros.
How to Get to Playa de Agios Petros
Getting to Playa de Agios Petros is part of the adventure and charm of visiting Skyros. The island itself is accessible mainly by two routes. The most common way for international and domestic travelers is to fly into Skyros National Airport (SKU), which has direct flights from Athens. Once at the airport, you can rent a car, take a taxi, or use local public transport to get to your accommodation and, from there, to the beach. The journey from the airport to Chora (the capital of Skyros) is about 17 kilometers.
The other popular option is to take a ferry. Ferries to Skyros depart regularly from the port of Kymi, on the island of Euboea (Evia). Kymi is accessible by bus from Athens. Once at the port of Linaria in Skyros, Chora is about 10 kilometers away. From Chora or the Molos/Magazia area, Playa de Agios Petros is located to the south, a short drive or scooter ride away. We always recommend renting a vehicle on the island, be it a car or a motorbike, to be able to explore not only this beach but all the wonders Skyros has to offer with total freedom. The signage to the beach is quite clear, and the road, although in some sections it can be a bit rural, is perfectly passable and worth it for the final reward.
The Sand and the Water
Playa de Agios Petros is certainly a spectacle for the senses, and much of its charm lies in the quality of its sand and the purity of its waters. When we talk about the sand of Agios Petros, we are referring to fine, golden sand, almost dreamlike, that stretches for over half a kilometer. It is the kind of sand that slips softly between your fingers, inviting long barefoot walks along the water's edge or building sandcastles with the little ones. Its golden color contrasts wonderfully with the turquoise and deep blue tones of the Aegean Sea, creating a color palette that is pure visual poetry.
But if the sand is impressive, the water is simply magical. The waters of Playa de Agios Petros are famous for their transparency and crystal-clear hue. We dare say they are some of the clearest waters we have found on the beaches of Greece. You can see the seabed with astonishing clarity, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling, even for beginners. The entry into the sea is gradual, with a gentle slope that allows you to wade in little by little without surprises, making it perfect for swimmers of all ages and especially safe for families with children. The water temperature, especially during the summer months, is pleasantly warm, inviting prolonged swims and full enjoyment of this aquatic paradise. It is one of those beaches of Skyros where you truly feel in harmony with nature.
Services and Facilities
Despite its relaxed atmosphere and natural beauty, Playa de Agios Petros offers a good range of services and facilities that ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay for all its visitors.
