Forget the typical images of beaches with golden sand and palm trees; here, at the southern tip of the island, we enter a landscape that seems taken from another planet. It is the result of thousands of years of volcanic erosion, where nature has sculpted whitish rock formations that rise majestically, creating a dramatic and absolutely photogenic backdrop.

The Playa de Vlychada is a true hidden treasure, an oasis of peace away from the bustle of Fira or Oia. When we visited, we felt transported to an unreal world, where silence is only interrupted by the gentle murmur of the waves and the wind whistling through the cliffs. Its volcanic sand in dark tones contrasts spectacularly with the white of the rock formations, creating a color palette that is a delight for the eyes. It is a place where natural architecture is the protagonist and where every corner invites contemplation and photography. How to get to Playa de Vlychada

Getting to Playa de Vlychada is relatively simple, although it gives us the feeling of heading to a secluded and exclusive place. It is located on the south coast of Santorini, about 13 kilometers south of Fira, the island's capital. We explored several options, and here we tell you the most practical ones:

By car or motorbike

This is, without a doubt, the most comfortable and flexible way to get there. We rented a car, which allowed us to move at our own pace and explore other nearby points of interest. From Fira, we took the road south towards Akrotiri. The signs for Vlychada are well indicated once we approach the area. The journey takes approximately 20-25 minutes, depending on traffic. There is a free and quite spacious Parking area right before the beach, which is a great advantage, especially in high season. If you prefer the freedom of a motorbike or a quad, it is also an excellent option, and the trip along Santorini's rural roads is an experience in itself.

By bus

The Santorini bus system, managed by KTEL, is efficient and economical, but requires a bit more planning. From Fira, we had to take a bus towards Perissa or Perivolos. Once there, we might need to make a transfer or, more commonly, walk a stretch. The bus stop closest to Vlychada is not directly on the beach, so a 15-20 minute walk under the sun is likely. We recommend checking the schedules in advance, as the frequency can vary depending on the season.

By taxi

For those seeking maximum comfort, a taxi from Fira or any other town on the island is a good alternative. It is more expensive, of course, but it drops you off right at the entrance to the beach. If you are traveling in a group, the cost per person can be reasonable. It is always a good idea to agree on the price with the driver before starting the journey.

The sand and the water

When stepping onto Playa de Vlychada, the first thing that catches our attention is its sand. It is not the white or golden sand one would expect from a Mediterranean beach. Here, the sand is a dark gray color, almost black in some spots, and has a coarse texture, mixed with small volcanic stones. It is the hallmark of Santorini's beaches and a constant reminder of the island's volcanic nature. This type of sand absorbs the sun's heat, so we recommend wearing proper footwear or sandals to avoid burning your feet, especially at midday.

The contrast of this dark sand with the imposing whitish cliffs and the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea is simply spectacular. We found it to be a natural canvas of unique colors, where each tone has its own geological story. It is a perfect place to understand the island's geology in a very visual and tactile way.

As for the water, we found an exceptionally clean and transparent sea. The waters of Vlychada are calm, of a deep blue that invites a relaxing swim. The depth increases gradually, making it relatively safe for swimming, although caution is always advised. We loved the feeling of floating in these waters, with the view of the cliffs and the blue sky as a backdrop. The water temperature is pleasant during the summer months, ideal for cooling off from the Greek sun. The clarity of the water also makes it a good place to do a bit of snorkeling, especially near the rock formations where marine life is a bit more diverse. Do not expect coral reefs, but rather the opportunity to see some small fish swimming among the rocks and pebbles.

Despite its more tranquil atmosphere and its 'wild' appearance in some sections, Playa de Vlychada is well equipped with services that guarantee a comfortable and pleasant stay. We greatly appreciated the balance between pristine nature and necessary amenities.

Umbrellas and sunbeds

In the more organized section of the beach, especially near the small port and the chiringuitos, we found wide areas with Umbrellas and sunbeds available for rent. This is ideal for those looking to relax in the shade and enjoy the sun without worrying about bringing their own equipment. The prices are reasonable and the comfort they offer is undeniable. We spent several hours here, reading and simply observing the landscape.
