If there is one jewel in the Cyclades archipelago that has stolen our hearts, it is Santorini, and within it, Playa de Kamari stands as an essential destination for any traveler. This is not just any beach; it is a natural canvas where the intense black of volcanic sand meets the deep blue of the Aegean Sea, creating an absolutely hypnotic visual contrast. Located on the east side of the island, at the foot of the imposing Mesa Vouno mountain, Kamari is much more than a place to swim; it is a hub of life, leisure, and incomparable beauty.

From the moment we set foot on its extensive promenade, we realize we have arrived at a special place. Playa de Kamari is synonymous with organization and comfort, offering a complete beach experience that caters to all tastes. How to Get to Playa de Kamari

Getting to Playa de Kamari is relatively easy, given its popularity and Santorini's good infrastructure. The island, although small, is very well connected. If we arrive by plane at Santorini International Airport (JTR), Kamari is only about 5-7 kilometers away, making the taxi ride very quick and comfortable. We can also opt for the local bus, which offers regular routes from the airport and other main towns.

From Fira, the island's capital, the most common and economical way to get there is by bus. The buses of the KTEL Santorini company are efficient and connect Fira with Kamari quite frequently, especially during the high season. The journey takes approximately 20-25 minutes and offers us panoramic views of the island's interior. If we prefer flexibility, renting a car or a scooter is an excellent option. There is ample parking near the beach, although it can be a challenge to find a good spot in the middle of August. For us, the comfort of having our own vehicle allows us to explore the surroundings of Kamari at our own pace, discovering hidden coves and charming villages.

The Sand and Water

The most distinctive feature of Playa de Kamari is, without a doubt, its sand. It is not the typical golden sand we associate with many Greece beaches; here, the sand is an intense black color, a product of Santorini's ancient volcanic activity. This volcanic sand is of the 'coarse' type, composed of small pebbles and gravel that, under the Aegean sun, can heat up considerably. Therefore, we strongly recommend bringing flip-flops or sandals for walking along the shore – our feet will thank us!

As for the water, it is simply spectacular. The waters of Kamari are famous for their transparency and deep dark blue color, which contrasts wonderfully with the black sand. They are calm waters, ideal for swimming and cooling off, and their cleanliness has earned the beach the prestigious Blue Flag, a mark of environmental quality. We should mention that the depth increases quite quickly a few meters from the shore, making it perfect for experienced swimmers, but requires a bit more attention if we are with small children. Still, the clarity of the water invites us to explore what lies beneath the surface, and often, we can see small fish swimming at our feet.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Kamari is an example of a beach fully equipped for visitor comfort. Along its more than fifteen hundred meters in length, we find a vast range of services that guarantee a worry-free beach day. To start, most of the beach is covered by rows of sunbeds and umbrellas, which we can rent for the day. Many of the beach bars and restaurants offer this service for free if we consume at their establishments, an option we often take advantage of.

In addition to basic amenities, the beach has showers to rinse off the salt and sand, and clean, accessible bathrooms/WCs. Safety is ensured by a team of lifeguards who monitor the beach during peak hours, giving us great peace of mind. The promenade, which runs parallel to the beach, is packed with beach bars and restaurants where we can taste delicious local cuisine, have a refreshing cocktail, or simply enjoy the views. There are also numerous souvenir shops, mini-markets, and travel agencies. Parking is plentiful on the adjacent streets, although, as mentioned, during high season it can be tricky to find a free spot. For action lovers, equipment rental for water sports is a constant, with options for all tastes.

Best Time to Visit

Santorini and, therefore, Playa de Kamari, shine in their own light during the summer months. The high season runs from June to September, with July and August being the busiest and hottest months. During this period, the water temperature is perfect for swimming, the sun is intense, and the nightlife in Kamari and its surroundings is at its peak. If we are looking for a vibrant atmosphere, with all facilities open and a great leisure offer, these months are ideal.
