Introduction
Santorini, that pearl of the Aegean that evokes images of whitewashed houses and dreamy sunsets, hides countless wonders among its cliffs and calderas. But beyond the postcards of Oia and Fira, and the vibrant beaches of Perissa or Kamari, there is a corner where tranquility and natural beauty merge in a unique way: Playa de Baxedes. If you are looking for an escape from the tourist bustle, a place where time seems to stand still and the island's volcanic nature is shown in its purest state, Baxedes is undoubtedly a wise choice. We have visited it, and we can assure you that it offers a different, more intimate and authentic experience than what we are used to finding on the more popular beaches of Greece.
Located on the north coast of the island, relatively close to the iconic Oia but sufficiently secluded to maintain its essence, Baxedes welcomes us with its characteristic dark-toned volcanic sand and crystal-clear waters that invite a swim. Do not expect a beach with all the comforts of a resort; its charm lies precisely in its wilder and less organized character. It is the perfect place for those who value peace, the sound of the waves, and the opportunity to connect with the landscape without interruptions. Here, luxury is space, calm, and the impressive view of the horizon, often dotted with small fishing boats.
How to Get to Playa de Baxedes
Getting to Playa de Baxedes is part of the adventure and allows us to explore the less traveled landscapes of Santorini. Given its location in the north of the island, near Oia, the most comfortable and flexible option is undoubtedly renting a vehicle. We recommend a car or a scooter, as it will give us the freedom to explore at our own pace and access this beach, which is not always connected by the most frequent public transport routes.
From Fira or the Airport
If we arrive in Santorini via Santorini National Airport (JTR) or are staying in the capital, Fira, the journey to Baxedes will be approximately 20-25 kilometers. We can take a taxi, which will take us directly, or rent a car at the airport or in Fira. The main road connecting Fira with Oia is easy to follow, and once we approach Oia, we will find the signs (although sometimes subtle) towards Baxedes or Koloumpos, a nearby beach. The final path to the beach can be a bit more rural and unpaved in some sections, but it is perfectly passable.
From Oia
For those staying in Oia, Playa de Baxedes is a short distance away, just 3-5 kilometers. It is a short and picturesque journey that we can do by car, scooter, or even by bicycle if we are adventurous. We simply need to head east from Oia, following the coastal road that moves away from the caldera. The proximity to Oia makes it an excellent option for a day trip from one of Santorini's most famous villages.
Public Transport
Public transport in Santorini mainly focuses on routes connecting Fira with the main villages and tourist beaches. While we can take a bus from Fira to Oia, from there there is no direct and frequent service to Baxedes. We would have to consider a taxi from Oia or, if we feel energetic, a slightly longer walk. For this reason, to visit Baxedes and enjoy its tranquility without rush, we always advise the autonomy offered by having our own vehicle.
The Sand and Water
Playa de Baxedes offers us a very particular sensory experience, marked by Santorini's volcanic geology. Upon arrival, the first thing that catches our attention is its sand. Unlike the golden beaches we usually imagine, here we find dark-toned volcanic sand, ranging from dark gray to jet black, mixed with small pebbles and stones polished by the sea. This combination creates a very characteristic beach floor, reflecting the island's geological history and giving it a somewhat wild and primeval appearance. It is important to consider that, under the intense summer sun, this sand can heat up considerably, so good sandals or water shoes will be our best allies.
The waters of Baxedes are another of its great attractions. We found them crystal clear and surprisingly calm, especially compared to the southern beaches that are often more exposed to the wind. The sea here is an intense blue that contrasts beautifully with the darkness of the sand, creating a visually striking landscape. The entry into the water is usually gentle, making it pleasant for all bathers. The water temperature is ideal for a refreshing dip during the warmer months, and its clarity invites us to observe the seabed, although there is not a great diversity of marine life as in other diving areas.
The combination of volcanic sand and peaceful waters gives Playa de Baxedes a distinctive character. It is a place where we can feel the energy of the island in a different way, more raw and natural, far from the palm trees and white sand of other destinations. For us, it is a constant reminder of Santorini's uniqueness and its powerful geological beauty.
Services and Facilities
One of the defining characteristics of Playa de Baxedes is its less developed and more pristine nature. This means that, unlike other more touristy beaches in Santorini, we will not find extensive service infrastructure. And for many of us, this is precisely part of its charm. If we are looking for a place to disconnect and enjoy nature, Baxedes is ideal, but we must go prepared.
