How to Get to Playa de Afandou

Getting to Playa de Afandou is surprisingly simple, which adds an extra point to its appeal. Located approximately 19 kilometers from the island's capital, Rhodes, and about 23 kilometers from the international airport, its accessibility makes it an ideal destination for any type of traveler. We always recommend considering the different transportation options to choose the one that best suits your needs and budget.

By Rental Car

Renting a car is, for us, the most comfortable and flexible option for exploring Rhodes and, of course, for getting to Playa de Afandou. The island has an excellent road network, and the journey from Rhodes city or from the airport is direct and well-signposted. Simply take the coastal road heading south and follow the signs towards Afandou. The beach has ample parking areas, free or low-cost, which greatly facilitates access and allows us to bring all our beach gear without worries. The freedom to come and go as we please, exploring hidden coves or nearby villages, is an undeniable added value.

By Bus

For those who prefer not to drive, public transport in Rhodes is an efficient and economical alternative. There are regular bus lines connecting Rhodes city with the village of Afandou. From the village, the beach is a short walk away, or during high season, there are sometimes small local buses or taxis that can take us to the shore. Schedules are usually reliable, although it's always a good idea to check them in advance, especially if we plan to stay until sunset. It's a great way to immerse ourselves in local life and enjoy the scenery without traffic worries.

By Taxi

Taxis are available all over the island, especially in the capital and at the airport. It's a more expensive option than the bus, but offers the convenience of a door-to-door service. If we are traveling in a group, the cost can be more manageable. We always recommend agreeing on the price with the driver before starting the trip to avoid surprises. For us, it's a good alternative if we value speed and comfort above all else, especially after a long flight or if we are heading directly to the beach from our accommodation.

The Sand and Water

The particularity of Playa de Afandou lies in its composition, which distinguishes it from many other beaches in Greece. Here, we won't find the typical fine, golden sand that characterizes some Mediterranean coasts, but a fascinating combination of polished pebbles and small sandy areas. This mix, which we call 'mixed', gives it a rustic and natural charm that we have loved. The pebbles, of various sizes and shades, have been shaped by the sea over time, and walking on them, we feel a special connection with the island's geology. It is advisable to wear suitable water footwear, like aqua shoes, for more comfort when entering and exiting the sea, especially if we have sensitive feet.

But if the sand and pebbles are distinctive, it is the water of Afandou that truly takes our breath away. Playa de Afandou is famous for its exceptionally clean and transparent waters, a quality that has earned it the prestigious Blue Flag year after year. When we dive in, the clarity is such that we can see the seabed with astonishing ease, even at several meters deep. The tones range from an intense blue in the deeper areas to a vibrant turquoise near the shore, creating a hypnotic visual spectacle. The water temperature is generally very pleasant during the summer months, inviting us to long swims and to fully enjoy the experience. Furthermore, being an open beach, the breeze usually keeps the atmosphere fresh and the waves are generally gentle, perfect for swimmers of all ages.
