How to Get to Playa de Souda (Plakias)

Getting to Playa de Souda (Plakias) is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it's quite straightforward. Located on the south coast of Crete, about 35 kilometers south of the city of Rethymno, the most comfortable way to access it is by car. If we fly into Chania (CHQ) or Heraklion (HER) airport, we can rent a car directly there and enjoy a picturesque journey through the Cretan interior. The trip from Rethymno capital takes approximately 45-50 minutes, following a well-signposted road that takes us through stunning mountain landscapes and small traditional villages. Once we reach Plakias, Playa de Souda (Plakias) is located about 2-3 kilometers to the west, easily accessible via a coastal road.

By Car

Renting a car gives us the freedom to explore not only Souda, but also other Rethymno (Crete) beaches and the hidden charms of the south. From Rethymno, we'll take the road towards Spili and then towards Plakias. There is sufficient parking space near the beach, which is a great advantage, especially during the high season months. The road is in good condition and the views along the way are spectacular, inviting us to stop at a viewpoint to admire the Cretan landscape.

By Bus

Although less flexible, public transport is an option. There are KTEL buses connecting Rethymno with Plakias several times a day. Once in Plakias, we can take a local taxi or, if we feel energetic, take a 30-40 minute walk along the coastal road to Playa de Souda (Plakias). It's a good way to immerse ourselves in the local rhythm, although we recommend checking bus schedules in advance, as they can vary depending on the season.

The Sand and Water

What surprises us most about Playa de Souda (Plakias) is the particularity of its 'sand' and the quality of its waters. Here, the ground is not fine golden sand like on other Greece beaches, but a pleasant mix of coarse sand and small pebbles polished by the sea. This combination gives it a unique character and, curiously, helps keep the water even clearer, as the sand doesn't get stirred up as easily with movement. Walking barefoot is a different experience, and perhaps water shoes are a good idea for the more sensitive, although we found its texture very pleasant.

The waters of Souda are, without exaggeration, crystal clear. The bay is well protected from the wind, which means the sea is usually calm, inviting long swims and snorkeling. The color of the water ranges from a bright turquoise to a deep blue, depending on the sunlight. The transparency is such that we can easily see the seabed, even several meters deep, making swimming here a true delight. The entrance to the sea is gentle and gradual, making it a safe and welcoming place, especially for the little ones in the family.

Services and Facilities

Despite its relaxed atmosphere, Playa de Souda (Plakias) does not skimp on services, making it a very comfortable option for spending the day. Here we find a perfect combination of nature and convenience. We highly value that a beach maintains its essence without giving up the basic comforts that make our stay more pleasant.

Essential Amenities

• Sunbeds and Umbrellas: Along the beach, there are ample areas where we can rent umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds for a reasonable price. This allows us to relax in the shade and fully enjoy the Cretan sun without worries.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Right next to the beach and in its surroundings, there are several chiringuitos and small tavernas. Here we can refresh ourselves with a cold drink, enjoy a Greek coffee, or savor a delicious lunch with sea views. The gastronomic offer is simple but authentic, with local dishes and fresh fish.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: After a refreshing swim, it's always nice to be able to rinse off the salt. Showers are available on the beach, as well as clean and well-maintained toilets, which is essential for an uninterrupted beach day.
• Lifeguard Service: During the high season, the beach has lifeguard services, which adds an extra layer of safety, especially if we are traveling with children. It's always reassuring to know there are watchful eyes present.
• Parking: As mentioned, there is ample free or low-cost parking space near the beach, which greatly facilitates arrival by car.
