Located in the Rethymno region, this small but stunning cove is a true paradise for nature lovers and, in particular, for those seeking to explore the fascinating underwater world. With its emerald-colored waters and visibility often exceeding 30 meters, Skinaria has earned a reputation as one of the island's best spots for diving and snorkeling.

Upon arriving at Playa de Skinaria, one is immediately captivated by its serene beauty. Surrounded by imposing cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation, the beach offers a tranquil refuge away from the bustle of more crowded tourist areas. How to Get to Playa de Skinaria

Getting to Playa de Skinaria is part of the adventure. From the city of Rethymno, the drive takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic and the exact route taken. The road is winding but in good condition, offering spectacular views of the Cretan landscape.

To get there, we generally recommend taking the main road heading south, towards Plakias. Before reaching Plakias, there are signposted turnoffs towards Damnoni and then towards Skinaria. It's important to pay attention to the signs, as the final road to the beach is a bit narrow and steep in some sections, but completely passable.

• By car or scooter: This is the most comfortable and flexible option. You can rent one in Rethymno or at Heraklion Airport. There is an informal parking area right above the beach.
• By taxi: A more expensive option, but direct and without worries about driving.
• By bus: There is no direct bus service to the beach. The option would be to take a bus to Plakias and then a taxi or walk (which would be a long hike) to Skinaria.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Skinaria welcomes us with a charming mix of fine sand and small pebbles, giving it a distinctive and natural character. This combination makes the ground comfortable for lying down and walking, and contributes to the astonishing clarity of the water. Don't expect vast stretches of soft white sand; here, the beauty lies in the authenticity of its mixed terrain.

But it's in the water where Skinaria truly shines. The waters of the Libyan Sea that bathe this coast are of astonishing transparency, with hues ranging from bright turquoise to deep blue. This exceptional clarity is partly due to freshwater springs that flow into the sea near the beach, as well as the absence of strong currents and sediment. The water temperature is generally warm and very pleasant during the summer months, inviting us to dive in and explore. It's a true natural aquarium, ideal for snorkeling and diving, where marine life is abundant and vibrant. The calmness of its waters makes it a safe and pleasant place for swimming.

Services and Facilities

Despite its natural and somewhat remote atmosphere, Playa de Skinaria offers essential services to ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay. We appreciate that it maintains its wild charm without sacrificing certain comforts:

• Chiringuitos: There is at least one taverna/chiringuito directly on the beach or very close by, where we can enjoy refreshments, coffees, and delicious local meals, including fresh fish. It's the perfect place to recharge after a swim.
• Sun Umbrellas and Sunbeds: During the high season, it's possible to rent sun umbrellas and sunbeds, allowing us to relax in the shade and fully enjoy the Cretan sun without worrying about bringing our own equipment.
• Parking: As mentioned, there is a (non-paved) parking area right above the beach, which is very convenient if traveling by car or scooter.
• Showers: Basic showers are generally found near the taverna to rinse off the salt after swimming.
• Lifeguards: During the months of highest tourist influx, there is usually a lifeguard service, adding an extra layer of safety, especially for families.

Best Time to Visit

We consider the best time to visit Playa de Skinaria and, in general, the Greece beaches and Crete, to be during late spring (May and early June) and early autumn (September and early October). During these months, the weather is glorious, with pleasant temperatures that allow you to fully enjoy the beach and outdoor activities without the extreme heat of summer.

• May and June: Temperatures are warm but not scorching, the sea is already warm enough for swimming, and the island is in full bloom, offering green and lush landscapes. Furthermore, the influx of tourists is lower, allowing you to enjoy the beach more peacefully.
• July and August: These are the hottest and most crowded months. While the water is at its most pleasant temperature, the beach can be more crowded, and the sun is very intense. If visiting during this time, we recommend going early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
• September and October: The weather remains fantastic, the sea stays warm thanks to the heat accumulated during the summer, and the crowd of tourists diminishes
