How to Get to Playa de Rodakino

Getting to Playa de Rodakino is part of the adventure and charm of this destination. We always recommend renting a car to explore Crete, and for Rodakino, it's practically essential. From the city of Rethymno, the journey takes about an hour and a half, covering approximately 45-50 kilometers. The road takes us through mountainous landscapes and picturesque Cretan villages, offering spectacular views that are a preview of what awaits us.

Access to the Rodakino beaches involves descending a winding road from the village of Rodakino, which adds a touch of excitement to the trip. Although the road is paved and passable, caution is required due to its curves and slopes. However, the reward at the end of the road, with the panoramic view of the Libyan Sea and the Rodakino coves, makes every kilometer worthwhile. There are free parking areas near the main coves, which facilitates arrival and access to the beach.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive characteristics of Playa de Rodakino is its composition. Unlike the fine sandy beaches found in other parts of Crete, here we discover a fascinating mix. The type of sand is mixed, combining coarser-grained sand with small pebbles polished by the sea. This combination gives it a particular feel and a unique texture under our feet, in addition to contributing to the exceptional clarity of the water.

The type of seabed at the shore is also mixed, mainly sand and pebble, which makes the water extraordinarily transparent. The waters of the Libyan Sea at Rodakino are famous for their purity and their hypnotizing turquoise and deep blue color. They are generally calm waters, somewhat protected by the surrounding rock formations, making them an ideal place for swimming and relaxing. The underwater visibility is excellent, inviting us to explore the seabed, even without snorkeling gear.

Best Time to Visit

For us, the key to fully enjoying Playa de Rodakino lies in choosing the right time to visit. While Crete is a sunny destination for much of the year, certain periods offer the perfect combination of good weather and fewer crowds.

• Late spring (May-June): This is, in our opinion, one of the best times. The weather is warm and pleasant, but not excessively hot. The sea is already warm enough for swimming, and the island is in full bloom, offering green and vibrant landscapes. Furthermore, the number of tourists is significantly lower than in peak summer, allowing us to enjoy the tranquility of Rodakino without crowds.
• Early autumn (September-October): Another excellent option. Temperatures remain very pleasant, the sea water is at its warmest after the whole summer, and the atmosphere is much more relaxed. Most summer tourists have already left, leaving the beaches clearer and accommodation prices often more attractive. It's perfect for those seeking a post-summer relaxation getaway.
