How to Get to Playa de Polyrizos

We always recommend renting a car to explore Crete at your own pace, and for this particular beach, it is the most comfortable option. From the city of Rethymno, the journey takes about an hour, driving along roads that wind through picturesque villages and mountainous landscapes. The route itself is a spectacle, offering panoramic views that invite you to stop and take photographs.

The final access to the beach is usually via a narrower, winding path, which leads directly to the parking area, which is informal but generally sufficient. Do not expect a large paved parking lot; rather, you will find space along the path or in a nearby dirt clearing. For those who prefer public transport, the options are more limited. Although there are buses connecting Rethymno with larger villages on the south coast like Plakias, from there you would have to find a taxi or walk a considerable distance, which is not the most practical if you are loaded with gear or with children. Therefore, the car is, in our experience, the best way to discover this wonderful beach Rethymno (Crete).

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive features of Playa de Polyrizos is the composition of its shore. Here, the beach is a charming mix of small pebbles and coarse sand, creating a unique texture underfoot. The pebbles polished by the sea give it a special shine and, although it may not be the finest sand you've ever stepped on, it adds a rustic and natural character that we love. We recommend wearing water shoes for greater comfort, especially for the little ones or if you plan to walk along the shore.

But if the shore is special, the waters of Polyrizos are simply spectacular. We are faced with crystal-clear waters of an intense turquoise color, so transparent that you can see the seabed with total clarity. The absence of strong currents and the gentle slope of the seabed make bathing extremely pleasant and safe, ideal for all ages. The water temperature, especially in the summer months, is warm and welcoming, inviting long swims and enjoying this aquatic paradise without rush. Services and Facilities

Despite its tranquil atmosphere and its somewhat wilder nature compared to more developed beaches, Playa de Polyrizos offers the essential services to ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay. We appreciate that it maintains a balance between organization and the preservation of its natural state.

On the beach, you will find the possibility to rent sun umbrellas and sunbeds, which is a relief under the Cretan sun. These are usually managed by the local beach bar or taverna, which is the heart of the beach's services. The chiringuito, often a charming traditional taverna, will offer you refreshing drinks, coffees and, most importantly, delicious local food. It is the perfect place to enjoy a lunch with sea views, tasting the authentic flavors of Crete.

Furthermore, the presence of an informal parking area facilitates car access, as we already mentioned. Often, the chiringuito also has basic showers to rinse off the salt and sand before leaving, and bathrooms/WC for your comfort. Although do not expect a luxury service complex, what Playa de Polyrizos offers is more than enough for a fantastic day, with the advantage that these services integrate harmoniously with the natural environment, without detracting one bit from its beauty.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing the right time to visit Playa de Polyrizos can make a big difference in your experience. We, based on our experience with beaches Greece, always advise considering your preferences regarding climate and crowds.

Spring (April - May)

Spring is, for us, one of the most magical times to visit Crete. The landscape is in full bloom, temperatures are pleasant (between 20-25°C) and the influx of tourists is significantly lower. The sea waters may still be a bit cool for some, but the sun is perfect for sunbathing and enjoying the tranquility of the beach. It is ideal if you are looking for peace, hiking in the surroundings, and a deeper cultural immersion without the crowds.
