How to Get to Playa de Korakas

Getting to Playa de Korakas is part of the adventure and, at the same time, relatively simple, although we recommend going by car for greater flexibility and to be able to explore the surroundings. The beach is located on the south coast of the Rethymno regional unit, about 45-50 kilometers south of the city of Rethymno.

By Car

From the city of Rethymno, the most common route involves taking the main road that crosses the island to the south. You should head towards Spili, a charming mountain village known for its lion-head fountains. From Spili, the road continues south, passing through Koxare and then towards the village of Rodakino. Once in the vicinity of Rodakino, you will find signage that will guide you directly to the beach. The car journey usually takes about an hour, depending on traffic and the stops you decide to make to admire the mountainous landscape. The roads are in good condition, although they can be a bit winding in some sections, which is typical of Crete. The parking at the beach is spacious and generally free, which makes the visit much easier.

By Bus

Although the car is the most comfortable option, it is also possible to get there by bus. There are KTEL bus services from Rethymno to some nearby villages, such as Plakias or Agia Galini. However, to get directly to Playa de Korakas or Rodakino, connections may be less frequent and require a taxi from the nearest village. It is always advisable to check the updated KTEL Crete schedules, as they can vary depending on the season. If you are looking for a more authentic experience and are not in a hurry, the bus can be an option, but for comfort and the freedom to explore, the car is the best choice for visiting this Rethymno (Crete) beach.

The Sand and Water

The distinctive feature of Playa de Korakas is its composition of sand and fine pebbles, which classifies it as a beach of mixed sand type and mixed ground type. Walking along the shore, you will notice a soft mixture that is comfortable underfoot, and the sound produced by the small stones being dragged by the waves is a soothing natural melody. This combination offers the best of both worlds: the softness of the sand for lying down and the clarity that the pebbles bring to the water. The beach is quite long, with an approximate length of 500 meters, which ensures enough space for everyone, even in high season, without feeling crowded.

But what truly captivates us about Playa de Korakas are its waters. They are famous for their transparency and their turquoise blue hue, which irresistibly invites a dip. The entry into the sea is gradual, making it very safe and pleasant, especially for young children and people who are not immediately comfortable in deep water. The underwater visibility is excellent, making it an ideal place for snorkeling, where we can observe small fish and local marine life without needing to venture far from the shore. Furthermore, the waters are usually calm, protected to some extent by the geography of the bay, which contributes to the atmosphere of relaxation that we so value in this Playa de Korakas.

Services and Facilities

Despite its tranquil atmosphere and being less crowded than other more famous beaches, Playa de Korakas does not lack the essential services that make our visit comfortable and worry-free. It is a well-organized beach that has managed to maintain its natural charm without sacrificing comfort.

• Sunbeds and umbrellas: During the beach season, comfortable sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented. This allows us to enjoy the sun without worrying about bringing our own equipment and ensures us a shady spot to protect ourselves from the intense Cretan sun.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: There are a couple of cozy tavernas and chiringuitos right next to the beach. Here we can savor authentic Cretan gastronomy, from fresh grilled fish to traditional dishes like 'moussaka' or 'dolmadakia', accompanied by a refreshing drink. They are perfect for a relaxed meal with sea views or for a simple coffee.
