How to Get to Playa de Geropotamos

Getting to Playa de Geropotamos is an exciting part of the adventure. This wonderful cove is located about 18 kilometers east of the city of Rethymno, on the north coast of Crete. The most comfortable and recommended way for us is, without a doubt, by rental car. Crete is an island that invites exploration at our own pace, and a car gives us the freedom to discover not only Geropotamos but also many other hidden treasures in its surroundings.

By Car

From Rethymno, we will take the national road E75 heading east, towards Heraklion. The exit towards Geropotamos is well signposted, approximately near the village of Panormos. We will see signs that guide us directly to the beach. The journey usually takes about 20-25 minutes, depending on traffic. There is a parking area, partly organized and partly dirt, right above the beach, which facilitates access, although in high season it can fill up quickly. From Heraklion, the journey is a bit longer, around an hour, following the same E75 road west.

By Bus

For those who prefer public transport, there are intercity buses (KTEL) that connect Rethymno with Heraklion and pass near the Geropotamos area. However, the nearest bus stop may be a considerable walking distance from the beach, so it may not be the most comfortable option, especially if we are loaded with umbrellas and coolers. We always recommend checking the updated schedules at the KTEL station in Rethymno, as they can vary depending on the season.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Geropotamos captivates us immediately with its combination of natural elements. Its surface is a charming mix of golden sand and fine pebbles, giving it a unique texture under our feet. In some areas, the sand is more predominant, while in others, the small pebbles polished by the sea add a rustic touch. This mix keeps the water incredibly clear, as sediment is not stirred up as easily as on pure sand beaches. It is always advisable to wear water shoes if we are sensitive to stones, although the transition at the shoreline is quite smooth.

The waters of Geropotamos are, without exaggeration, spectacular. Their transparency is astonishing, with shades ranging from turquoise blue in the shallow areas to a deep indigo further out. Being a relatively sheltered beach, its waters are usually calm and warm, especially during the summer months, making it an ideal place for swimming and relaxing. The water quality is excellent, a fact confirmed by its recognition as a Blue Flag beach. We love diving in and feeling the freshness of the Aegean, observing the small fish swimming near the shore. It's a paradise for snorkeling, especially around the rock formations and the famous arch, where marine life is a bit more diverse.

Essential Amenities

• Umbrellas and Sunbeds: Most of the beach is equipped with rows of straw umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds that we can rent for a modest price. This is ideal for those looking to spend the day without worrying about bringing their own beach gear. It allows us to relax completely in the shade, enjoying the sea breeze.
• Chiringuitos: There is at least one beach bar or taverna directly on Geropotamos. Here we can enjoy refreshing drinks, coffees, ice creams, and some snacks or light meals. We love the convenience of being able to order something fresh without having to go too far from the shore. The atmosphere is usually relaxed and welcoming.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: After a refreshing swim, it's always nice to be able to rinse off the salt and sand. The beach has freshwater showers and toilets, an essential service we greatly value for our comfort and that of families with children.
• Parking: As mentioned before, there is a parking area available, which is a great advantage on an island where access to some beaches can be complicated. Although it can fill up in high season, the possibility of parking close to the beach saves us time and effort.
