Introduction

If there is one place in Crete that captures the essence of Mediterranean relaxation with a touch of authentic charm, that is undoubtedly Playa de Damnoni. Located on the southern coast of the Rethymno prefecture, this Cretan gem is a destination that has captivated us since our first visit. Far from the hustle and bustle of big cities, Damnoni offers a respite, a place where time seems to slow down, inviting us to enjoy every moment under the Greek sun.

When thinking about Rethymno (Crete) beaches, Damnoni stands out for its harmonious combination of natural beauty and well-organized services. Its turquoise waters, protected by a bay, are incredibly calm and transparent, making it a paradise for both experienced swimmers and the youngest family members. The sand, a pleasant mix of fine pebbles and coarse sand, stretches generously, offering plenty of space for all visitors. It is a Rethymno (Crete) beach that, although popular, never feels overwhelmingly crowded, always maintaining a serene and welcoming atmosphere.

How to Get to Playa de Damnoni

Getting to Playa de Damnoni is part of the adventure and, at the same time, surprisingly simple. We always recommend renting a car to explore Crete at our own pace, and for Damnoni, this is the best option. From the city of Rethymno, the journey takes approximately 45-60 minutes, depending on traffic and the route we choose. The road takes us through mountainous landscapes and picturesque villages, offering spectacular views of inland Crete.

From Rethymno

We take the E75 road heading east and then turn off to the south, following the signs to Plakias. Damnoni is located just a few kilometers east of Plakias, well signposted. The road descending to the beach is a bit winding, but it's in good condition and offers impressive panoramic views of the bay before reaching our destination. There is ample Parking available right behind the beach, which makes arrival and unloading our things very easy.

Public Transport

Although a car is ideal, it is also possible to get there by bus. There are regular services from Rethymno to Plakias, especially during the high season. From Plakias, Damnoni is about 5-10 minutes by taxi or, if we feel energetic, about 25-30 minutes on foot. For us, the walk is a good way to stretch our legs and enjoy the scenery, but if we are loaded with luggage or have small children, a taxi is the most comfortable option.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Damnoni is a perfect example of the natural beauty of Greece beaches. Its coastline is composed of a pleasant mix of coarse sand and small pebbles, giving it a golden color and a unique texture. It's not the fine, white sand of some Caribbean beaches, but it has its own charm, and for us, it's much more practical as it doesn't stick to the skin or towels as much. It's comfortable for walking and building small sandcastles, although for the little ones, water shoes can be useful for easier entry and exit from the water.

But what really makes us fall in love with Damnoni is its waters. They are spectacular! Of a vibrant blue-turquoise color, they are remarkably crystal clear and calm. The bay protects the beach from strong winds, resulting in a calm sea most of the time, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, or simply floating carefree. The entry into the water is gradual, making it very safe for children and those who are not expert swimmers. We love the feeling of freshness and cleanliness that the sea offers here; it's one of those beaches where you can spend hours in the water without realizing it.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Damnoni is a very well-equipped beach, making it comfortable and practical for a worry-free holiday. It holds the prestigious Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies the excellent quality of its waters, environmental management, and safety, something we always highly value. Here, we find everything we need for a perfect beach day:

• Sunbeds and umbrellas: There are plenty of umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds available for rent, distributed along the beach. It's ideal for protecting ourselves from the intense Cretan sun and relaxing with a good book.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Right behind the beach, there are several Chiringuitos and Restaurants offering everything from quick snacks and refreshing drinks to delicious traditional Cretan meals. We love being able to enjoy a good coffee or a cold beer without having to go far from the shore.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: The facilities are clean and functional, which is essential after a dip in the sea. The Showers allow us to rinse off the salt and sand before leaving.
• Lifeguards: During the high season, the beach has Lifeguards who watch over the safety of swimmers, giving us additional peace of mind, especially if we are with children.
• Parking: As mentioned before, there is ample free or low-cost Parking, which is a great advantage in such popular beaches.

Best Time to Visit

Crete enjoys a Mediterranean climate that makes it an attractive destination for much of the year, but to fully enjoy Playa de Damnoni, we always recommend planning the visit during certain times.

• High season (July and August): These months are the warmest and sunniest, with perfect water temperatures for swimming. However, they are also the months with the highest tourist influx.
