How to Get to Playa de Vroulidia

Getting to Playa de Vroulidia is part of the adventure, and its relative difficulty is what helps maintain its pristine charm. Located in the southern part of the island of Chios, the most practical and almost indispensable way to reach it is by car or motorcycle. We always recommend renting a vehicle to explore the island at our own pace, and for Vroulidia, this is especially true due to the nature of the final path.

From the capital, Chios Town, the journey takes approximately 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic and the exact route taken. Generally, we will take the road south, towards the famous Mastic Villages (the villages of mastic). Once we pass through villages like Pyrgi or Mesta, we must watch for signage, which can be somewhat scarce or discreet, indicating the turnoff towards Vroulidia. The last part of the road is a dirt track, sometimes a bit steep and with some tight curves. Although it is passable with a normal car, caution is required, with slow and patient driving to navigate the irregularities of the terrain. A 4x4 vehicle or a motorcycle can offer greater comfort and safety on this final stretch, especially if we are not used to unpaved roads.

At the end of the track, we will find a small area where it is possible to park the car, often without clear signage but evident by the presence of other vehicles. From there, a short and not too demanding trail will lead us directly to the shore. This trail, although not very long, can be a bit rocky, so it is advisable to wear comfortable and secure footwear. The journey may be a bit bumpy, but the reward upon arriving at Playa de Vroulidia is well worth the effort. The feeling of discovering this hidden treasure, far from the usual routes, is incomparable and connects us with the purest essence of a beach in Chios.

The Sand and Water

The most distinctive feature of Playa de Vroulidia is certainly the combination of its ground and the clarity of its waters. Unlike many fine-sand beaches found in other parts of Greece, Vroulidia is composed mainly of white, round pebbles, mixed with some coarse sand. The water quality at this beach in Chios is simply exceptional, making it an idyllic destination for lovers of the sea and pristine nature.

Services and Facilities

It is important to have clear expectations regarding services at Playa de Vroulidia. We consider it a wild beach in the best sense of the word, which means its beauty lies precisely in its natural state and not in developed tourist infrastructure. This implies that we will not find the usual amenities of more organized beaches that we might expect at other beaches in Greece.

Directly on the beach, facilities are practically non-existent. There are no umbrellas or sunbeds for rent, which means if we desire shade, we must bring our own umbrella. There are also no showers or changing rooms, so the option is the 'freshwater shower' we bring in a bottle or a quick change under a towel. The absence of lifeguards is a point
