How to Get to Mavra Volia Beach (Black Volcanic Stones)

Getting to Mavra Volia Beach is part of the adventure and, although it requires a bit of planning, the reward is immense. Generally, the best way to access this natural wonder is by car. From the island's capital, Chios Town, the journey takes approximately 40-50 minutes, depending on traffic and the specific route we take. We always recommend renting a vehicle, as it gives us the freedom to explore the island at our own pace and discover its most remote corners.

Route from Chios Town

To get there, we will take the main road heading towards the south of the island, passing through several picturesque villages until we reach the region of Mesta or Pyrgi. Our final nearby destination is the charming village of Emporios, a small fishing port with a very authentic atmosphere. Once in Emporios, there are signs that will guide us towards Mavra Volia Beach. The road becomes a bit narrower and winding, but it is perfectly passable. The parking, although not formally organized, is usually a wide dirt area where we can comfortably leave the car.

The Final Stretch on Foot

From the parking area, a short but significant descent on foot awaits us. It's a dirt and stone path that can be a bit uneven, so we advise wearing appropriate footwear, no slippery flip-flops. This short walk, just a few minutes long, prepares us for the majesty that is to come. As we descend, the volcanic landscape is revealed in all its magnitude, and the view of the deep waters and black pebbles tells us we have arrived at one of the most special places in Greece.

Available Services

• Parking: As mentioned earlier, there is a dirt area where we can leave the car, although it is not a formally marked or paid parking lot. It is functional and allows us to access the beach easily.
• Chiringuitos: Although there are no chiringuitos directly on the sand of Mavra Volia, in the nearby port of Emporios, a short distance away, we will find some tavernas and cafes where we can enjoy a refreshing drink or a local meal after our swim. Some of these small kantinas offer basic services during the high season, but it's good to be prepared with our own provisions of water and something to eat.
