How to Get to Playa de Vagia

Getting to Playa de Vagia is part of the adventure and charm of discovering this special corner of Patmos. To begin, the island of Patmos is mainly accessible by sea. We recommend taking a ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens, or from other nearby islands like Rhodes, Samos, or Kos, if we are already exploring the Dodecanese. Ferries usually arrive at the island's main port, Skala, a vibrant hub that serves as the gateway to all the wonders of Patmos.

From Skala to Vagia

Once in Skala, we have several options to get to Playa de Vagia. The distance is approximately 9 to 10 kilometers, which means a journey of about 15-20 minutes by vehicle.

• Car or scooter rental: This is, without a doubt, the option we prefer and the one we most recommend. Renting a car or scooter gives us the freedom to explore Patmos at our own pace, stopping at scenic viewpoints or other points of interest we discover along the way. The roads on Patmos are generally good, although the road to Vagia, especially the last stretch, can be a bit narrower and with some curves, but perfectly manageable. There are rental agencies in Skala that offer a good variety of vehicles.
• Taxi: For those who prefer not to drive, taxis are available in Skala and can take us directly to Playa de Vagia. It is a comfortable and fast option, ideal if we are traveling with luggage or in a group. It is always advisable to agree on the fare before starting the journey.
• Local bus: During the high season, there are bus services connecting Skala with some of the more popular beaches of Patmos. However, the service to Vagia may be less frequent or not go directly to the shore, leaving us with a short walk. It is important to check the updated schedules at the Skala bus station.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Vagia, one of the aspects that captivates us the most is the uniqueness of its shore and the purity of its waters. It is not a fine, golden sand beach in the traditional sense, but rather offers us a much richer and more varied tactile and visual experience, which distinguishes it from other beaches in Greece.

The Shore: Pebbles and Sand

The shore of Playa de Vagia is a charming mix of polished pebbles and coarse sand. We find this combination to be incredibly pleasant underfoot. The pebbles, of different sizes and shades, have been smoothed by the constant ebb and flow of the waves over the centuries, creating a unique texture. Among them, the coarse sand appears, offering small, softer patches to sit or lie on. This characteristic makes the water exceptionally clear, as the sand is not easily stirred up, maintaining perfect visibility even at some depth. It is advisable to wear water shoes if we have sensitive feet, although many prefer to feel the natural texture of the beach.

The Water: Crystal Clear and Tempting

But it is in the water where Playa de Vagia truly shines. Its waters are, without exaggeration, of astonishing transparency. The color varies from a bright turquoise near the shore to a deep blue as we go further in, a visual spectacle that irresistibly invites us to dive in. The clarity is such that we can easily see the seabed, observing small fish swimming among the rocks and seaweed. This makes it an ideal spot for snorkeling, even for beginners, as we don't need great depths to enjoy the marine life.

The water temperature is generally very pleasant during the summer months, refreshing but not cold, perfect for combating the Greek sun's heat. Furthermore, being a protected cove, the waters are usually calm, with little to no waves, making it very safe for swimming and for children to splash around without worry.
