How to Get to Playa de Petra

Getting to Playa de Petra is part of the adventure of discovering the beautiful island of Patmos. First, we must reach the island itself, which is done mainly by sea. Patmos does not have an airport, which helps preserve its charm and tranquility. Ferries are the most common means of transport, connecting Patmos with the port of Piraeus in Athens, as well as with other islands of the Dodecanese and the Aegean. The crossings can take between 7 and 9 hours from Athens, depending on the type of ferry, so we recommend planning ahead and perhaps opting for a night ferry to make the most of your time.

Once in Patmos, we will disembark at Skala, the main port and the nerve center of the island. From Skala, Playa de Petra is conveniently located about 4-5 kilometers to the south, in Grikos Bay. We have several options to reach this idyllic corner:

• Local bus: During the high season, there are regular bus services connecting Skala with Grikos. The journey is short and picturesque, and once in Grikos, Playa de Petra is a short walk away. It's an economical option and allows us to enjoy the scenery without worries.
• Taxi: Taxis are available in Skala and offer a quick and comfortable ride directly to the beach. It's a good option if we are traveling with luggage or if we simply prefer comfort.
• Vehicle rental: For those of us who prefer the freedom to explore at our own pace, renting a car, motorbike, or scooter in Skala is an excellent idea. The road to Grikos is well-maintained and gives us the flexibility to visit not only Petra but also other Patmos beaches and the island's charms. It's the option we usually choose for total autonomy.
• On foot or by bicycle: For the more adventurous and those who enjoy exercise, the distance from Grikos to Petra is perfectly walkable, offering wonderful views of the coastal landscape. It can also be reached by bicycle, an eco-friendly and healthy way to discover the surroundings.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Petra, we cannot fail to describe its unique combination of sand and pebbles, which makes it a fascinating tactile and visual experience. The ground type at Petra is what we would call 'mixed': a pleasant mix of smooth pebbles and golden sand that stretches along the coast.
