How to Get to Playa de Meloi

Getting to Playa de Meloi is part of its accessible charm. We usually recommend several options, depending on your preferences and the spirit with which you want to explore the island of Patmos.

From Skala

• On foot: If you're staying in Skala, the walk to Meloi is a pleasant stroll of about 20-25 minutes. It's a relatively flat route that follows the coastline and offers nice views of the port. It's the ideal option for those who enjoy light physical activity and want to soak up the local atmosphere before reaching the beach.
• By scooter or car: Renting a scooter or a car is a fantastic way to explore the entire island, and Meloi is only about 5 minutes away by vehicle from Skala. There is a small informal parking area right next to the beach, which makes arrival very easy. This option gives us the freedom to carry more things and to move to other coves or points of interest afterwards.
• By taxi: If you prefer comfort, a taxi from Skala will take you to Meloi in the blink of an eye. It's a quick and hassle-free option, especially useful if you're traveling with small children or a lot of luggage.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Meloi welcomes us with an enchanting combination that makes it unique. Its sand type is mixed, a harmonious blend of golden sand and small pebbles polished by the sea. This gives it a particular texture and a special shine under the sun. The predominant seabed type at the shore is also mixed, making it easy to enter the water without needing water shoes, although it's always a good idea to bring them if you have sensitive feet.

But what truly captivates us about Meloi is its waters. They are incredibly crystal clear, allowing you to see the seabed with total clarity. The color is a gradient of blues and turquoises that invites you to dive in immediately. The most notable feature is its calmness. Being in a sheltered bay, the waves are minimal or non-existent, making it an exceptionally safe place to swim, especially for the little ones. It's one of those beaches of Patmos where you can float without worries and feel completely at peace.

Services and Facilities

Despite its intimate size, Playa de Meloi offers the essential services to ensure a comfortable and pleasant day. We highly value that, without losing its natural essence, it provides what's necessary to enjoy without worries.

• Chiringuitos: The heart of Meloi is its famous taverna, Taverna Meloi. Known for its delicious traditional Greek food and fresh fish, it's the perfect place to enjoy lunch or dinner with sea views. Here you can try local specialties and refresh yourself with a cold drink. It's more than just a simple chiringuito; it's a culinary experience in itself.
• Sunbeds and umbrellas: The taverna also usually offers sunbed and umbrella rentals, allowing us to relax comfortably in the shade after a swim. It's an excellent way to spend the day without having to carry our own equipment.
• Parking: As mentioned, there is an informal parking area right next to the beach, which facilitates access if you come by car or scooter.
• Showers: Often, tavernas and beaches in Greece have basic cold water showers, perfect for rinsing off salt and sand before heading home. Meloi usually has this simple but much-appreciated service.

Best Time to Visit

For us, choosing the right time to visit Playa de Meloi and, in general, the beaches of Patmos, can make a big difference in your experience. Greece shines in summer, but the shoulder season months often offer a perfect balance.

• Spring (May - Early June): This is one of our favorite times. The weather is mild and pleasant, with ideal temperatures for swimming and sunbathing without the intense heat of peak summer. The island is in full bloom, and the influx of tourists is considerably lower. You can enjoy the beach with almost exclusive tranquility.
• Summer (Mid-June - August): July and August are the warmest and busiest months. The water temperature is perfect for a refreshing swim, and the atmosphere in Patmos is vibrant. If you don't mind the crowds and are looking for a livelier atmosphere, this is your time. However, in Meloi, even in high season, the crowd is much smaller than at other beaches of Greece.
