Located on the island's quiet west coast, this hidden gem offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of the more popular beaches, inviting us to immerse ourselves in a landscape where time seems to stand still. It is a vast canvas of golden sand kissed by the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, a sanctuary for those who yearn for peace and the authentic Mediterranean experience.

When we think of Naxos beaches, images of organized coasts with umbrellas and 'chiringuitos' often come to mind. However, Playa de Amitis stands out for its pristine and wild character. Here, nature is the undisputed protagonist, offering us a space where we can reconnect with ourselves and our surroundings. It is the perfect place for long walks along the shore, refreshing swims in incredibly clear waters, or simply lying in the sun and enjoying the sound of the waves.

How to Get to Playa de Amitis

Getting to Playa de Amitis is part of the adventure and contributes to its charm as a 'hidden' beach. It is located on the west coast of Naxos, about 15-20 kilometers southwest of Naxos Town (Chora), the island's capital. The most recommended and practically essential way to access it is by private vehicle: a rental car, motorbike, or quad. The main roads on Naxos are in good condition, but the last stretch to reach Amitis may be a dirt or gravel track, adding a touch of exploration to your journey.

From Naxos Town, the journey usually takes between 25 and 35 minutes, depending on traffic and your driving pace. We advise you to follow the signs towards Mikri Vigla or Kastraki and then look for the turn-offs towards Amitis. Although it is a lesser-known beach, there is usually some signage. The parking is informal; you can simply leave your vehicle on the side of the dirt track leading to the beach, finding a safe spot without obstructing the path. Remember that as it is an unorganized beach, there are no designated parking lots as such, but there is always enough space for the low number of visitors.

It is important to consider that, due to its somewhat remote location and lack of direct public transport, Playa de Amitis is not the easiest option for those without a vehicle. However, precisely this limited accessibility is what helps preserve its tranquil and virgin atmosphere, making the journey's effort worthwhile upon reaching this paradise.

The Sand and Water

What first captivates us when stepping onto Playa de Amitis is its impressive expanse of fine, golden sand. It is soft sand underfoot, perfect for walking barefoot for kilometers or for laying out our towel and enjoying the sun's warmth. Unlike other island beaches that may have pebbles or coarser sand, Amitis offers a classic beach experience, where the softness of the sand invites relaxation and play.

The waters bathing the coast of Amitis are simply spectacular. They are crystal clear and a vibrant turquoise color, so transparent that we can easily see the seabed. Generally, the waters are calm and shallow near the shore, making them very attractive for a relaxing swim. Facing west, the beach is somewhat protected from the northern winds (meltemi) that sometimes hit the Cyclades in summer, contributing to the calmness of its waters. This combination of fine sand and serene waters creates an idyllic setting for swimming, floating, and simply enjoying the purity of the Aegean Sea.

Services and Facilities

This is where Playa de Amitis reveals its true 'wild' nature: it almost completely lacks organized services and facilities. And precisely in this absence lies much of its charm for us. You will not find 'chiringuitos', restaurants, showers, public toilets, nor the umbrella and sunbed rental service that is so common on other Naxos beaches. This is a beach for purists, for those who value natural beauty over commercial comforts.

The only 'service' we could mention is the informal parking along the access track, where you can leave your car. This means that if you plan to spend a few hours or the whole day at Amitis, it is absolutely essential that you come prepared. We always recommend bringing your own provisions: plenty of drinking water, snacks, some fruit, and any other drinks you desire. It is also crucial to bring your own umbrella or some type of sun shelter, as there are no natural shades on most of the beach.

The lack of lifeguards is also a point to consider, especially if you are traveling with children. Although the waters are usually calm, it is always important to exercise extreme caution. For us, this absence of facilities is what makes Amitis a true escape, a place where the beach experience is genuine and without distractions. It is the perfect opportunity to disconnect and fully immerse yourself in the virgin nature of Greece beaches.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing the best time to visit Playa de Amitis will depend on your personal preferences, but generally, we would recommend late spring and early autumn. During the months of May, June, and September, the climate in Naxos is exceptionally pleasant, with warm but not excessive temperatures, clear skies, and fewer tourists.
