However, the island of the winds holds a secret for those seeking a different experience, a refuge where nature and tranquility intertwine with the thrill of water sports. We are talking about Ftelia Beach, a destination that, while perhaps not the most well-known, is undoubtedly one of the most authentic and captivating on the island.

Ftelia Beach is a place we love to recommend. Located in the northern part of Mykonos, this beach stands out for its constant exposure to the Meltemi winds, making it a sanctuary for windsurf and kitesurf enthusiasts. But not only that; its natural beauty, crystal clear waters, and the absence of large crowds also make it perfect for those who simply wish to relax, read a book, or enjoy a beach day away from the hustle and bustle. It is a beach with soul, speaking to us with the whisper of the wind and the vastness of the Aegean, inviting us to connect with the purest essence of Greece.

How to Get to Ftelia Beach

Getting to Ftelia Beach is part of the adventure and offers us a more rural view of Mykonos. Generally, the best option is to rent a car or a motorbike, as the public bus service to this part of the island is limited or non-existent, depending on the season. From Mykonos Town (Chora), the journey takes approximately 15-20 minutes. We always recommend using a GPS, as the signage in Mykonos can be a bit confusing, and Ftelia is somewhat off the main routes.

Transportation Options

• Rental Car: This is the most comfortable and flexible option, allowing us to explore the surroundings at our own pace. There are several rental agencies at the airport, the port, and Mykonos Town.
• Motorbike/Scooter: A fun and agile way to get around Mykonos' narrow roads, ideal for couples or solo travelers. However, caution is advised with the wind, which can be strong on the road to Ftelia.
• Taxi or Private Transfer: A more expensive but worry-free option. We can hail one in Mykonos Town or book in advance. It's ideal if we don't want to drive or if we arrive late at the airport.

The Sand and the Water

Ftelia Beach welcomes us with a combination of sand and small pebbles, what we call 'mixed sand'. Don't expect the fine, white sand of other more famous Mykonos beaches; here the texture is a bit more rustic, but equally pleasant underfoot. The entry into the sea is gentle and gradual, making it comfortable for swimming, though always with the caution that the wind can create waves.

Marine Environment Characteristics

• Sand Type: Predominantly sand, but with the presence of small stones and pebbles, especially near the shore and in some areas of the beach. This gives it a more natural and less 'polished' look than other tourist beaches.
• Water Color: The Aegean Sea water at Ftelia is an intense turquoise blue, with amazing transparency that allows us to easily see the seabed. Despite the winds, the water quality is excellent, inviting us for a refreshing dip.
• Water Temperature: During the summer months, the water temperature is warm and very pleasant, perfect for swimming and water sports. Even in spring and autumn, swimming is possible for the braver ones.
• Waves and Current: Due to its orientation and exposure to the wind, Ftelia is known for its waves, especially when the Meltemi blows strongly. This is precisely what attracts windsurfers, but it can make swimming more challenging for less experienced swimmers or young children. However, there are calmer days when the sea is still, offering a serene swim.

Although Ftelia Beach is known for its wilder, less developed atmosphere, it does not lack essential services that ensure a comfortable stay. We appreciate that, despite its natural character, we can find everything needed to enjoy a full day at the beach.

• Sunbeds and Umbrellas: In the more organized part of the beach, managed mainly by the Ftelia Beach Club, we will find comfortable sunbeds and umbrellas that we can rent. It's ideal for protecting ourselves from the sun and wind, and allows us to relax in style.
• Beach Bars and Restaurants: The Ftelia Beach Club is the main point of reference here. It offers an excellent restaurant with sea views, where we can enjoy delicious Greek and Mediterranean cuisine, as well as drinks and cocktails. It's a place with a lot of charm, combining sophistication with beachside relaxation. There is also some other small taverna or bar in the vicinity, though less prominent.
• Parking: As mentioned before, there are parking areas available, which is essential given the beach's location and the need to arrive by private vehicle.
