Introduction
From the moment we set foot on Playa de Finikounda, in the heart of beautiful Messenia in the Greek Peloponnese, we are enveloped by an atmosphere of serenity and Mediterranean charm. This idyllic corner, with its golden sand and turquoise waters inviting a swim, is much more than just a beach; it is a destination that encapsulates the essence of Greek beaches: hospitality, natural beauty, and a history felt in every breeze. We, as lovers of beach tourism, have explored countless coasts, but Finikounda has that 'je ne sais quoi' that makes it truly special.
Playa de Finikounda is not just a place to sunbathe; it is an epicenter of summer life, where families, couples, and solo travelers find their own rhythm. The village that embraces it, also called Finikounda, is an old fishing port that has managed to preserve its authenticity, despite its growing popularity. Here, time seems to slow down, allowing us to enjoy every moment, from the quiet sunrises over the sea to the vibrant nights in its tavernas. It is, without a doubt, one of the jewels of the Messenia (Peloponnese) beaches, a place we always wish to return to.
How to Get to Playa de Finikounda
Getting to Playa de Finikounda is an exciting part of the adventure, and we always recommend planning ahead to ensure a hassle-free trip. The most common way for international travelers is to fly into Kalamata International Airport (KLX), which is about an hour's drive away. This airport, while not huge, receives direct flights from several European cities during the high season, making it a very convenient gateway to the Messenia region.
Once in Kalamata, the most practical option, and the one we always prefer, is to rent a car. The freedom offered by a vehicle allows us to explore not only Finikounda but also the charming villages and historical sites in the surrounding area at our own pace. The road from Kalamata to Finikounda is picturesque, winding through olive groves and small traditional villages, offering spectacular views of the Ionian Sea. The journey is about 60 kilometers and, although there are local buses, their frequency can be limited and they do not go directly to the beach, which makes us lose valuable enjoyment time.
For those arriving in Greece via Athens, Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (ATH) is the main option. From Athens, the trip to Finikounda is longer, approximately 3.5 to 4 hours by car. We have taken this route several times and the highway is excellent, making the journey quite comfortable. There is also the option of taking an intercity bus (KTEL) from Athens to Kalamata, and from there, another bus or a taxi to Finikounda. However, for maximum comfort and flexibility, a rental car remains our top recommendation, especially if we plan to explore the richness of the Messenia (Peloponnese) beach and its surroundings.
The Sand and the Water
When we talk about Playa de Finikounda, it is impossible not to start by describing its sand and waters, which are, without a doubt, its most captivating features. We, who have traveled many coasts, can affirm that the sand here is of exceptional quality: fine, golden, and soft to the touch, a delight to walk on barefoot. It stretches for about 600 meters, offering ample space for all visitors to find their perfect spot, whether to lie in the sun or to build sandcastles with the little ones. The texture of the sand is so pleasant that it invites you to spend hours simply relaxing, feeling its warmth under your feet.
But if the sand is a delight, the water is a true gem. The waters of Finikounda are crystal clear and of a vibrant turquoise color, reminding us of the most idyllic Mediterranean postcards. What impresses us most is its calmness and shallow depth near the shore, making it an exceptionally safe and attractive place for families with young children. We can go in several meters and the water will barely cover us, allowing children to play and splash with total freedom, under the watchful supervision of their parents. This characteristic, along with the absence of strong currents, is what distinguishes it as one of the most swimmer-friendly Greek beaches for bathers of all ages.
The water temperature is another of its great attractions. During the summer months, from June to September, the sea remains pleasantly warm, inviting long swims and enjoyment of water activities without feeling cold. We, who enjoy swimming, find in these waters the perfect setting to cool off and relax under the Greek sun. The transparency of the water is such that we can easily see the seabed, making it ideal also for a bit of improvised snorkeling near the rocks at the ends, where marine life is more diverse. Without a doubt, the combination of fine sand and serene, warm waters is what makes Playa de Finikounda a paradise for sea lovers.
