It is not just a beach; it is an experience that weaves together history, nature, and Greek hospitality into an unforgettable tapestry. Located at the foot of the imposing Byzantine castle of Molyvos, this beach offers us a postcard-perfect setting, where the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea gently kiss a shore that invites rest and contemplation. How to Get to Playa de Molyvos
Getting to Playa de Molyvos is part of the adventure and, at the same time, a straightforward experience that allows us to appreciate the landscapes of Lesbos. The gateway to the island is Mytilene International Airport 'Odysseas Elytis' (MJT), located in the capital of Lesbos, Mytilene. From there, the journey to Molyvos, located in the northern part of the island, is approximately 60 kilometers and offers spectacular views of the interior and the coast.
From Mytilene Airport
- Rental Car: This is, without a doubt, the most recommended option for us. It provides the freedom to explore the island at our own pace and reach Molyvos comfortably. There are several car rental agencies at the airport, and the drive takes about an hour and a half. The road is scenic and well-signposted.
- Taxi: Another comfortable option is to take a taxi directly from the airport. Although more expensive, it is ideal if we are traveling with a lot of luggage or prefer not to drive. Taxis usually have fixed rates for main destinations.
- Local Bus (KTEL Lesvos): There is a bus service connecting Mytilene with Molyvos. However, it may require a transfer at the central bus station in Mytilene and schedules can be less frequent, especially outside the high season. It is the most economical option and allows us to mingle with local life.
The Sand and Water
Playa de Molyvos welcomes us with a unique combination that distinguishes it from other pure sand beaches. Its ground is a charming mix of fine pebbles and coarse sand, giving it a particular texture under our feet and a special shine under the Aegean sun. This mixed composition is not only pleasant but also contributes to the exceptional clarity of its waters.
Ground and Sand Characteristics
- Ground Type: Predominantly mixed, with a base of small pebbles that gradually mix with coarser sand as we approach the shore and into the water. We recommend wearing water shoes if we are sensitive to stones, although they are not strictly necessary.
- Color: The sand and pebbles have tones ranging from light gray to ochre, beautifully contrasting with the deep blue of the sea.
Water Quality
The waters of Playa de Molyvos are, without exaggeration, spectacular. Their Blue Flag classification is a testament to their excellent quality and purity. They are remarkably crystal clear and calm, making them perfect for swimming and relaxing. The entry into the sea is gentle and gradual, providing safety and comfort, especially if traveling with children or the elderly.
- Temperature: During the summer months, the water temperature is very pleasant, inviting long swims and full enjoyment of the sea.
- Clarity: Underwater visibility is fantastic, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling, allowing us to observe local marine life without venturing far from the shore.
Services and Facilities
Playa de Molyvos stands out not only for its natural beauty but also for the excellent range of services and facilities it provides, ensuring our visit is as comfortable and pleasant as possible. It is an organized beach, designed to meet the needs of all visitors.
Comfort and Convenience
- Sunbeds and Umbrellas: Along the beach, we will find numerous rows of umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds available for rent. This allows us to enjoy the Greek sun with the guarantee of refreshing shade when needed and a place to relax comfortably by the sea.
