How to Get to Playa de Myrtos

Getting to Playa de Myrtos is part of the adventure and, fortunately, quite straightforward. Located on the south coast of Lasithi (Crete), the most comfortable and flexible way to access it is undoubtedly by rental car. We always recommend this option to explore the island at our own pace and discover its many hidden treasures.

From the Main Airports

• From Heraklion International Airport (HER): This is the airport closest to Myrtos. The drive takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes (about 80 km) by following the E75 national road east and then taking signposted exits towards Ierapetra and finally Myrtos. The roads are well-paved and the signage is clear.
• From Chania International Airport (CHQ): This airport is farther away, about 2 hours and 45 minutes (about 200 km). From Chania, we must head east on the E75, passing through Heraklion, until reaching the turnoff for Ierapetra and Myrtos.

Public Transport

Public transport in Crete is managed by the KTEL company, which offers a fairly efficient bus network. However, getting directly to Myrtos by bus may require transfers and be less convenient, especially if we are traveling with luggage. Typically, we would need to take a bus to Ierapetra, the largest town in the area, and from there, a local bus or taxi to Myrtos (approximately 15-20 km).

Travel Tips

• Car Rental: Booking a car in advance, especially during high season, is crucial. There are numerous rental agencies at the airports and in major towns.
• GPS/Maps: A good navigation system or a maps app on your phone will be very helpful, although signage is generally good.

For those not accustomed to pebble beaches, we recommend bringing water shoes or aqua socks. This will make walking along the shore and entering and exiting the water much more comfortable, allowing us to fully enjoy the experience without worrying about the small stones. Once this small detail is overcome, the reward is a swim in some of the cleanest and clearest waters we can find in Crete.
