How to Get to Playa de Karoumes

The journey to Playa de Karoumes is, in itself, a fundamental part of the experience. We highly recommend this route, as the trail is a natural spectacle that prepares your senses for the final beauty.

The Hohlakies Gorge Adventure

To start the hike, you must head to the village of Hohlakies, or more precisely, to the starting point of the gorge, which is well signposted. There is a small parking area where you can safely leave your car. Once there, the adventure begins. The hike through the Hohlakies Gorge is relatively easy, but requires proper footwear (hiking shoes or comfortable sneakers) and, of course, water and sun protection, especially if you visit the beach in the warmer months.

The trail follows the bed of a dry river (or with very little water, depending on the time of year) and is flanked by high rocky walls and lush vegetation. Along the way, you will encounter small oases of freshness, centuries-old olive trees, and rich local flora and fauna. The total distance of the hike is approximately 2 to 3 kilometers, and it will take us between 1 and 1.5 hours, depending on our pace and the stops we make to admire the landscape and take photographs. It is a path to be enjoyed, without haste, feeling nature with every step. The reward, at the end of the gorge, is the sight of the dazzling Playa de Karoumes, opening before us like a gift.

The Sand and Water

When stepping onto Playa de Karoumes, the first thing we notice is not fine golden sand, but an expanse of pebbles and small stones. This is something we love, as it gives it a distinctive character and contributes to the exceptional clarity of the water. The pebbles are smooth and polished by the constant embrace of the sea, and although they may not be as comfortable as sand for lying directly on, they make the water incredibly transparent, without suspended particles.

The sea at Karoumes is a turquoise blue that seems taken from a postcard. The waters are calm, crystal clear, and, in the summer months, delightfully warm and refreshing. The underwater visibility is spectacular, making it a paradise for snorkeling enthusiasts. We spent hours exploring the small underwater caves and rock formations, amazed by the marine life teeming in its depths. It is a perfect place to swim peacefully, be rocked by the waves, and simply enjoy the purity of the Cretan Mediterranean. The combination of pebbles and pristine waters is, without a doubt, one of the greatest attractions of this Lasithi (Crete) beach.

Services and Facilities

This is where the wild nature of Playa de Karoumes becomes most evident: services and facilities are practically non-existent. And it is precisely this absence that, for us, enhances its charm. You will not find beach bars, nor umbrella and sunbed rental stalls, nor showers, nor lifeguards. This is a beach for self-sufficiency, for those who value connection with nature above modern comforts.

We always recommend that those who visit Karoumes prepare thoroughly. This means bringing everything they might need for the day: plenty of drinking water, some food or snacks, sunscreen, a hat, a large towel to lie on the pebbles or even a light mat, and of course, a bag to take all the trash back with you. It is essential to respect the environment and leave no trace of our visit. The beauty of Karoumes lies in its pristine state, and it is the responsibility of all of us to keep it that way. The lack of services becomes an invitation to total disconnection, an opportunity to truly escape the world and immerse ourselves in the peace that only such a virgin place can offer.
