And, of course, its main beach, known simply as Playa de Ierapetra (Ciudad), is the epicenter of all that energy. This is not just any beach; it is the soul of the city, a canvas where locals and visitors mingle under the Cretan sun, enjoying the warm waters of the Libyan Sea. We found it to be a perfect refuge, a place where time seems to slow down, inviting us to immerse ourselves in the island's culture and leave behind the stress of daily life. It is one of those Lasithi (Crete) beaches that combines the comfort of being in a city with the natural beauty of the coast.

Playa de Ierapetra (Ciudad) is a clear example of how tourist infrastructure can coexist harmoniously with an admirable natural environment. We were pleasantly surprised to see how, despite its urban character, the beach maintains an atmosphere of cleanliness and care, something that is rewarded year after year with the prestigious Blue Flag. This distinction not only guarantees the excellent quality of its waters but also the tidiness of its facilities and the safety of its bathers. For us, it was a pleasure to discover such an accessible and well-equipped beach, ideal for all types of travelers, from families with young children to couples looking for a corner to relax or friends eager to socialize at the chiringuitos. This Lasithi (Crete) beach is, without a doubt, a gem in the south of the island.

How to Get to Playa de Ierapetra (Ciudad)

Getting to Playa de Ierapetra (Ciudad) is extremely easy, as it is integrated into the very urban fabric of Ierapetra, the southernmost city in Europe. We opted to rent a car, which gave us great freedom to explore not only the beach but also the surroundings. From Heraklion, the capital of Crete, the journey takes about an hour and a half to two hours, following a well-signposted road that passes through impressive landscapes. Once in Ierapetra, the beach is easy to locate, as it borders much of the city's seafront promenade.

If you prefer public transport, there are regular buses from the KTEL company connecting Ierapetra with major cities in Crete, such as Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos. The Ierapetra bus station is conveniently located within walking distance of the beach, which greatly facilitates access. For those staying in the city, the beach is accessible on foot from most hotels and apartments. There is also parking available, both paid and some free areas on adjacent streets, although in high season it can be a bit more difficult to find a spot, as happened to us on a couple of occasions. However, the advantage of having the beach so close to everything is undeniable.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Ierapetra (Ciudad) greeted us with a distinctive mix of dark sand and small pebbles, a characteristic feature of many Greece beaches, especially in this part of Crete. It is a texture that, while it may not be the fine, golden sand some imagine, has its own charm and is very comfortable underfoot. The dark sand absorbs the sun's heat, making it pleasant even on not-so-hot days, and the sea-polished pebbles add a natural, rustic touch to the landscape. We loved the feeling of stepping on this mix as we headed to the water.

But if there is one thing that truly captivated us about Playa de Ierapetra (Ciudad), it was its waters. The Libyan Sea, which bathes this coast, is famous for its incredible clarity and turquoise blue color, and here it is no exception. The waters are extraordinarily transparent, allowing you to easily see the seabed, inviting a refreshing swim or snorkeling. Furthermore, they are remarkably calm, protected to some extent by the shape of the bay and by natural and artificial breakwaters. This makes it an ideal place to swim safely, even for the youngest members of the family. The water temperature, especially in the summer months, is delightful, perfect for a prolonged dip and enjoying the sea breeze. For us, the water quality was one of the strong points that made us return day after day to this Lasithi (Crete) beach.

Playa de Ierapetra (Ciudad) stands out for offering a complete range of services and facilities that guarantee a comfortable and pleasant experience for all its visitors. We greatly appreciated finding everything we needed within reach. Being an urban beach, the proximity to the city means you are never far from what you might need.

Among the services we used the most are:

• Sunbeds and umbrellas: Along much of the beach, we found areas with sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent, which allowed us to relax comfortably under the Cretan sun without worrying about bringing our own equipment. The prices were reasonable and the staff very attentive.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: The beach is dotted with charming chiringuitos where we could enjoy refreshing drinks, ice creams, and snacks. Right next to the promenade, there is a wide variety of restaurants offering everything from authentic Greek cuisine to international options, perfect for a meal or dinner with sea views.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: Having showers to rinse off the salt and sand after swimming, as well as clean and accessible Toilets/WC, was a big plus that contributed to our comfort throughout the day.
• Lifeguards: The presence of lifeguards watching over the beach gave us extra peace of mind.
