Introduction
We venture into the heart of Crete, in the Lasithi region, to discover one of those hidden gems that, once visited, remain etched in memory. We are talking about Playa de Havania, a small but captivating cove that offers us the essence of Lasithi (Crete) beaches: crystal-clear waters, soft sand, and an atmosphere of serenity that invites total disconnection. Located a short distance from the vibrant city of Agios Nikolaos, this beach has become a popular refuge for both locals and travelers seeking to escape the hustle and bustle without straying too far from amenities.
From the moment we set foot on Playa de Havania, we are greeted by an idyllic postcard. The Aegean Sea, with its shades of turquoise blue, merges with the sky on the horizon, while the soft golden sand invites us to take off our shoes and feel the caress of the Cretan earth. It is a beach that breathes tranquility, where the sound of the waves becomes the perfect soundtrack for a day of relaxation. For us, it is the ideal place to recharge our batteries, enjoy the Mediterranean sun, and immerse ourselves in the natural beauty that only Greece beaches can offer.
How to Get to Playa de Havania
Getting to Playa de Havania is relatively easy, especially if we are staying in Agios Nikolaos or its surroundings. This Lasithi (Crete) beach is located just about 3 kilometers north of the center of Agios Nikolaos, making it very accessible. If we have a rental car, the journey is short and well signposted. We always recommend having our own vehicle to explore Crete at our own pace, as it gives us the freedom to discover remote coves and villages.
For those who prefer not to drive, there are other options. From Agios Nikolaos, we can take a taxi, which will drop us off directly at the beach in a few minutes. Another alternative is public transport; although there is no bus stop right at the beach, we can get off on the main road and walk a short distance. For the more adventurous or those looking for a pleasant walk, it is also possible to walk from Agios Nikolaos, enjoying the coastal views. At the beach itself or in its vicinity, we find a Parking area that, although not excessively large, usually has spaces available, especially if we arrive early in the morning.
The Sand and Water
The main feature of Playa de Havania is, without a doubt, its fine golden sand. It is a delight for the feet, perfect for building sandcastles with the little ones or simply for lying down and enjoying the sun. Unlike other Cretan beaches with pebbles or rocks, the experience of walking and relaxing on the shore here is extremely pleasant. The softness of the sand extends to the shoreline, creating a gradual and safe entry into the sea, which is ideal for all ages.
But if the sand conquers us, the water makes us fall in love. The waters of Playa de Havania are famous for their transparency and calmness. Of a vibrant turquoise blue color, they invite a refreshing swim. They are usually calm waters, protected from the prevailing winds, making them a perfect natural pool for swimming, floating, or simply splashing around. The underwater visibility is excellent, allowing us to observe small fish and the seabed without the need for special equipment. The water temperature, especially during the summer months, is pleasantly warm, allowing us to spend hours enjoying a swim without feeling cold. It is, without a doubt, one of the greatest attractions of this Playa de Havania beach.
Services and Facilities
Despite its compact size, Playa de Havania is very well equipped, which contributes to its popularity and the comfort of its visitors. One of the most valued services is the presence of Lifeguards during the high season, which gives us additional peace of mind, especially if we are traveling with children. Knowing that there are professionals watching over our safety is, for us, a big plus.
The beach has an excellent offer of Sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent, allowing us to enjoy the shade and comfort without having to carry our own equipment. Furthermore, we find Showers to wash off the salt and sand after a refreshing swim, as well as clean and well-maintained Bathrooms/Toilets, a detail we always appreciate. To replenish our energy, the beach has several Chiringuitos and Restaurants in its vicinity, where we can enjoy a cold drink, a Greek coffee, or a delicious lunch with sea views. These establishments usually offer a variety of local and international dishes, ensuring we always find something to our liking. The presence of the Blue Flag is a testament to the high quality of its waters, its environmental management, and the excellence of its services, something we are proud to highlight about this wonderful Lasithi (Crete) beach.
Best Time to Visit
The choice of the best time to visit Playa de Havania will largely depend on our personal preferences regarding climate and crowds. Generally, the tourist season in Crete runs from May to October, with the central summer months (July and August) being the warmest and busiest.
If we are looking for warm and vibrant weather, with all facilities and services in full operation, then July and August are ideal. The air and water temperatures are the highest, allowing us to fully enjoy the beach. However, they are also the months with the highest influx, so the beach can be more crowded. If we prefer a more tranquil atmosphere but with equally pleasant weather...
