How to Get to Playa de Galini

Getting to Playa de Galini is relatively easy, especially if we travel by car, which is the most comfortable and flexible way to explore this beautiful region of Crete. The beach is located on the east coast of the island, in the Lasithi prefecture, very close to the charming village of Kalo Chorio and about 10-12 kilometers southeast of the provincial capital, Agios Nikolaos. Its strategic location allows us to enjoy the tranquility of the cove while being a short drive from the amenities and atmosphere of a larger town.

If we are coming from Heraklion, the capital of Crete, the drive will take approximately an hour and a half, following the national road E75 towards the east. The route is scenic and well-maintained, offering spectacular views of Crete's coastal and mountainous landscape. Once we approach Agios Nikolaos, we must take the exit towards Kalo Chorio/Istron. From Kalo Chorio, signage towards the area's beaches, including Voulisma or Karavostasi, will guide us. Playa de Galini is a smaller cove, often accessible from the vicinity of these larger beaches, or via a well-signposted turnoff from the main road that leads directly to it. There is a small parking lot or areas to park the car near the cove, which greatly facilitates access to the sand, even if we bring beach chairs or equipment for the children.

For those who prefer public transport, there are local buses connecting Agios Nikolaos with Kalo Chorio and Istron. However, from the main bus stop in Kalo Chorio, we will likely have to walk a bit (about 15-20 minutes) or take a local taxi to get directly to the cove, as the bus service does not go all the way to the shore. Our sincere recommendation is to rent a car to have total freedom and be able to explore not only Playa de Galini but also the countless historical, cultural, and natural wonders of Lasithi (Crete) at our own pace, without depending on fixed schedules.
