How to Get to Playa de Ferma

Getting to Playa de Ferma is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it's quite straightforward, especially if traveling by car, which is the option we always recommend for thoroughly exploring Crete. Ferma is located on the south coast of the Lasithi province, about 10-12 kilometers east of the city of Ierapetra, which is the largest city in the area.

From Ierapetra

If you are in Ierapetra, the journey to Ferma is short and picturesque. Simply take the coastal road heading east (towards Agia Fotia, Koutsounari). You'll see signs indicating Ferma and its beaches. The road is well-paved and offers impressive views of the Libyan Sea. In about 15-20 minutes you'll be there. Parking is available near the beach, which is a great advantage.

From Agios Nikolaos

For those coming from Agios Nikolaos, one of the most well-known cities in Lasithi, the journey is a bit longer, approximately 45-50 kilometers. You'll need to head south, passing through villages like Pachia Ammos, and then take the road towards Ierapetra. Once in Ierapetra, follow the aforementioned directions east. The estimated travel time is about one hour, depending on traffic and any stops you make to admire the landscape.

From Heraklion (Airport)

If your starting point is Heraklion Airport (HER), the capital of Crete, the journey will be the longest, but also the most direct. The distance is approximately 95-100 kilometers. We recommend taking the national road (E75) east towards Agios Nikolaos. Before reaching Agios Nikolaos, take the exit towards Ierapetra and, once there, continue east to Ferma. The driving time is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours, not counting possible stops. Renting a car directly at the airport is, without a doubt, the most comfortable and practical option for having the freedom to move around the entire island and discover not only the Lasithi (Crete) beach but also its surroundings.

The Sand and Water

When we arrive at Playa de Ferma, the first thing that catches our attention is its particular composition. It's not a typical fine golden sand beach, but rather presents a charming mix of sand and small pebbles. This combination gives it a unique character and, at the same time, is practical: the sand allows for comfortable walking and the pebbles contribute to the amazing clarity of the water, as it doesn't get stirred up as easily as fine sand.

The color of the sand varies from golden to gray tones, dotted with sea-polished stones, creating a very photogenic natural mosaic. The feeling underfoot is pleasant, although if you are sensitive, you might prefer to use water shoes, especially when entering the water, where the pebbles can be a bit more prominent in some areas. We, personally, find that this mixed texture adds a touch of authenticity to the beach experience.

But if there's something that truly captivates us in Ferma, it's the quality and transparency of its waters. They are a vibrant turquoise blue, so clean and clear that we can easily see the seabed, even several meters deep. This exceptional clarity is one of the reasons why Playa de Ferma has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies excellence in water quality, environmental management, safety, and services. Swimming in these waters is a delight; the temperature is usually very pleasant from late spring to early autumn, inviting long swims and exploring marine life with a snorkel mask.
