How to Get to Playa de Ammos

Getting to Playa de Ammos is extremely easy, one of its great advantages. Being located in the centre of Agios Nikolaos, accessibility is excellent. If you arrive by plane at Heraklion International Airport (HER), the most comfortable way to get there is by renting a car, which will allow you to explore Crete at your own pace. The journey from Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos takes about an hour by car, following the E75 road east. The views along the way are spectacular, with the Aegean Sea on one side and the mountainous Cretan landscape on the other.

Public Transport

For those who prefer public transport, there are regular and comfortable buses from the KTEL company connecting Heraklion with Agios Nikolaos. Once at the Agios Nikolaos bus station, the beach is a short walk away, just 5-10 minutes, making it ideal if you are staying in the city centre. You can also opt for a taxi from the station if you have a lot of luggage or simply prefer the comfort.

By Car

If you come by car, you will find parking options in the vicinity of the beach. Although it's a central area, there are public car parks and some street parking on adjacent streets. Our recommendation is to arrive early, especially in high season, to secure a good spot. Its proximity to the main hotels and apartments in the city makes it a practical choice for any type of traveller.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Ammos, it's impossible not to highlight the quality of its sand and the clarity of its waters. We are dealing with a beach of fine, golden sand, incredibly soft to the touch, perfect for walking barefoot, building sandcastles with the little ones, or simply spreading out a towel and enjoying the Cretan sun. Its ground type is predominantly sand, making it very comfortable and pleasant.

The waters of the Aegean Sea at Ammos are simply spectacular. Their transparency is such that you can easily see the seabed, inviting you to take a refreshing dip in its turquoise and deep blue hues. The beach has a gradual entry into the sea, making it very safe for children and for those who don't feel entirely comfortable in deep water. The calmness of its waters, protected by the bay, is another of its great attractions, creating a perfect environment for swimming and relaxation. It is, without a doubt, one of the Lasithi (Crete) beaches that stands out for its quality.

• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Along the promenade bordering the beach and in its vicinity, there is a great variety of chiringuitos and restaurants where you can taste delicious local cuisine, have a coffee, or enjoy a refreshing drink. Many offer service directly on the sand.
• Showers and Toilets/WCs: Essential for freshening up after a swim in the sea or for changing in privacy. They are well-maintained and easily accessible.
• Lifeguards: The presence of lifeguards during the high season provides additional peace of mind, especially for families with children, ensuring safe swimming for everyone.
• Parking: As mentioned before, there are nearby parking options, which facilitates access if you arrive by car.
• Access: Although it doesn't have full specialised accessibility for all disabilities, access to the beach from the promenade is relatively easy, with ramps in some places.

Best Time to Visit

Crete enjoys an excellent Mediterranean climate, making Playa de Ammos an attractive destination for much of the year. However, for us, the best time to visit is between late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October).

Spring and Autumn

During these months, temperatures are pleasant, the sun shines brightly but without the stifling heat of summer, and the crowds are smaller.
