By Sea: The Ferry is Our Best Option

The main way to access Kythnos is, without a doubt, through ferry services. We recommend planning this trip in advance, especially if visiting during the peak summer season, to secure our tickets and choose the schedule that best fits our plans.

• From Piraeus Port (Athens): This is the largest and busiest port in Greece. There are regular connections to Kythnos, although the journeys are usually longer, ranging from 3 to 4 hours, depending on the type of ferry (conventional or high-speed). It's a comfortable option if we arrive first in Athens and want to combine our visit to the capital with an island getaway. The views from the ferry, sailing through the Aegean, are always a spectacle for us.
• From Lavrio Port (near Athens): Lavrio is often the preferred option due to its proximity to Kythnos and for offering shorter journeys, which can last between 1 hour and 45 minutes and 2 hours and 30 minutes. It's a smaller and less chaotic port than Piraeus, which we value for a more relaxed start to our vacation. The trip from Lavrio quickly immerses us in the atmosphere of the Cyclades, with the sea breeze and the promise of idyllic beaches.

From Merichas Port to Loutra

Merichas Port is the island's point of entry and exit, and from there we have several options to get to Playa de Loutra, located about 15-20 minutes away by car.

• By Local Bus: During the summer months, there are bus services connecting Merichas with Loutra, as well as with Chora (the island's capital) and Dryopida. We find it to be an economical option and it allows us to enjoy the local landscape and the island's daily life, observing the villages and countryside as we head to our destination.
• By Taxi: At Merichas Port we will always find taxis available, especially during ferry arrivals. It's a quick and direct way to get to our accommodation in Loutra, which is ideal if we are traveling with a lot of luggage, with small children, or in a group, seeking maximum comfort from the very first moment.
• Car or Motorbike Rental: For us, this is the ideal way to explore Kythnos and its beaches, including Loutra. Renting a vehicle in Merichas gives us the freedom to move at our own pace, discover hidden coves, visit every corner of the island, and, of course, access Playa de Loutra with complete autonomy. The road to Loutra is well signposted and in good condition, offering a pleasant journey with panoramic views.

We recommend bringing sandals or water shoes if planning to walk along the shore for a long time or if you have sensitive skin, although the overall experience is very comfortable and does not detract from the charm of the place. This mixed composition also contributes to the clarity of the water, as the pebbles help settle any sediment, keeping the sea incredibly transparent.
