How to Get to Playa de Skinos

Getting to Playa de Skinos is part of the adventure and, at the same time, a straightforward experience. Given its proximity to Vathy, the capital of Ithaca, access is relatively easy, although it requires a private or rented vehicle. We always advise renting a car or a motorbike to explore Ithaca, as it will give you the freedom to discover hidden coves like Skinos at your own pace. From Vathy, the journey is short, just about 10-15 minutes by car, and offers panoramic views of the bay.

Route from Vathy

To get there, you must take the road heading south-east from Vathy. The route is scenic, winding through hills covered with olive trees and cypresses, offering glimpses of the Ionian Sea. There is signage, although sometimes discreet, that will guide you towards Skinos Bay. Once nearby, you will find a path descending to the beach. The parking is informal; visitors usually park their vehicles along the road or in small designated spots near the shore, under the shade of the trees. It is free and unorganized parking, which adds to the natural charm of the beach.

Alternative Access by Sea

For the more adventurous or those who prefer a different arrival, Playa de Skinos is also accessible by sea. It is common to see small private boats or water taxis transporting visitors from Vathy directly to the beach. This option offers a unique perspective of Ithaca's coastline and allows you to enjoy the bay from the water before setting foot on land. While not the most common way, we consider it a memorable experience, especially if you combine the visit with a tour of other nearby coves.

These pebbles, of various sizes, have been smoothed by the waves over the centuries, resulting in a comfortable surface for walking and laying out a towel, although we always recommend bringing sandals or water shoes for greater comfort, especially when entering and exiting the water. The mix of these small stones with some gravel areas creates a unique texture, which we have classified as 'mixed' for the surface type, with pebbles predominating on the ground.

But if there is something that truly makes us fall in love with Playa de Skinos, it is the quality of its waters. They are of astonishing transparency, with shades ranging from the lightest aquamarine to a deep sapphire blue. Skinos Bay is well protected from the winds, which ensures its waters remain unusually calm and with hardly any waves, creating a natural pool effect. This calm is perfect for swimming, and the visibility is so excellent that it makes it a paradise for snorkeling enthusiasts.

We have spent hours exploring the seabed of Skinos, observing the aquatic life hidden among the rocks and pebbles.
