How to Get to Sarakiniko Beach

Getting to Sarakiniko Beach is part of the adventure and charm of visiting it. Located in the southern part of the island of Ithaca, relatively close to the capital, Vathy, access is quite simple, although it requires a vehicle. We recommend renting a car or a scooter to have total freedom of movement on the island. From Vathy, the journey takes approximately 10-15 minutes along a road that, although winding and narrow in some sections, gifts us with impressive panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and Ithaca's mountainous landscape. The signage is adequate, making it easy to find the way.

Once we approach the beach, we'll find an improvised parking area, usually a dirt clearing where we can leave the vehicle. From there, it's just a short walk to the shore. It's important to consider that, being a beach with minimal infrastructure, the final path may not be perfectly paved, so comfortable footwear is always a good idea. The ease of access, combined with the reward of reaching such a beautiful paradise, makes the small effort of the journey completely worthwhile.

The Sand and Water

This is where Sarakiniko Beach truly shines. Forget traditional fine sand; what awaits us at Sarakiniko are thousands of small white pebbles, polished and smooth, covering the entire shore. These immaculate white pebbles are responsible for the incredible clarity and iridescent turquoise color of the water. When walking on them, we notice a distinct texture, and although it's not the typical soft sand, the sensation is pleasant and unique. It's important to note that, due to the nature of the pebbles, the beach has been classified with `tipo_arena`: 'coarse', although its `tipo_suelo` is certainly 'pebble'.

And then there's the water. Oh, the water! It's so transparent that we can see the seabed with astonishing clarity, even at several meters deep. The tones change magically with the sunlight, from an emerald green near the shore to a sapphire blue in the distance. The absence of suspended sand contributes to this exceptional clarity. Sarakiniko's waters are generally calm and warm, especially during the summer months, making them perfect for swimming and, above all, for snorkeling. The experience of immersing oneself in this liquid embrace is purely rejuvenating, one of the best things we can do on any of the Greece beaches.

Services and Facilities

For those seeking a more natural and less commercial beach experience, Sarakiniko Beach is ideal. It's important for us to be clear that this Ithaca beach does not have extensive tourist infrastructure, which contributes to its wild and virgin charm. We won't find a promenade full of shops, nor public showers, nor permanent lifeguard services, as is common in other larger and more organized Ithaca beaches. Its beauty lies precisely in its simplicity and in the fact that it remains relatively untouched.

However, this doesn't mean we're completely helpless. During the high season months, it's common to find a chiringuito or a small mobile canteen offering refreshing drinks, some snacks, and perhaps umbrella or sunbed rentals. This service is basic, but sufficient to spend a pleasant day under the sun. We always recommend bringing our own towels, sunscreen, water, and perhaps some fruit or a picnic, especially if we plan to spend several hours. The absence of crowds and the feeling of freedom that Sarakiniko offers more than compensates for the lack of more elaborate services. It's a place to enjoy nature in its purest state.

Best Time to Visit

The choice of the right time to visit Sarakiniko Beach can make a big difference in our experience. Like many Greece beaches, summer is the high season, with July and August being the busiest and warmest months. While the weather is perfect for swimming, the influx of visitors can take away a bit of the tranquility that so characterizes Sarakiniko.
