Located at the mouth of the Chalares river, Playa de Nas is distinguished by its wild beauty, imposing cliffs, and, what makes it even more special, the presence of the ruins of the ancient temple of Artemis Tauropolos, which stand discreetly above the sand. From the first moment one glimpses this Ikaria beach, it's clear we are facing something different. The crystal-clear waters, often dynamic due to the influence of the river and the open sea, invite a refreshing swim. But it's at dusk when Playa de Nas reveals its true charm. Its sunsets are legendary, painting the sky in golden, orange, and purple hues, creating a visual spectacle that is etched in memory and which, without a doubt, makes it one of the most photogenic beaches in all of Greece. It is the perfect place for those seeking a natural refuge, away from the bustle, where the raw beauty of the island manifests in all its splendor.

How to Get to Playa de Nas

Getting to Playa de Nas is part of the adventure and contributes to its aura of exclusivity. We find ourselves on the northwest coast of Ikaria, near the picturesque village of Armenistis. From Armenistis, the journey is short, just a few kilometers, but requires attention. The road leading to the beach parking is winding and narrow, snaking along the mountainside. It is advisable to drive with caution, especially in high season when traffic can be heavier.

Once we reach the parking area, which is usually an earthen area at the top of the cliff, the real descent begins. To access the sand, we must go down a stepped path, sometimes steep with irregular steps. This path, while adding a touch of rustic charm, can be a bit challenging for people with reduced mobility, very young children, or those carrying a lot of beach gear. However, every step is worth it, as the panoramic views during the descent are spectacular, offering a first glimpse of the majesty that awaits us at Playa de Nas.

The Sand and the Water

Playa de Nas welcomes us with a combination of elements that make it unique. Its surface is a mix of medium-grain sand and small pebbles or cobbles, especially near the shore and at the river mouth. This characteristic gives it a very natural and wild appearance, far from the fine, uniform sand beaches often found in other destinations. The mixed texture of the ground makes it pleasant to walk barefoot, although for greater comfort, especially if we plan to spend several hours, sandals or water shoes can be useful for entering and exiting the water.

The waters of Playa de Nas are, in general, incredibly crystal-clear and of a turquoise blue that invites a swim. However, it is important to note that, due to its location at the mouth of the Chalares river and its exposure to the open sea, the character of the water can vary. At times, especially after rains or during spring, the river can bring a considerable flow, mixing its cooler waters with those of the sea. This can influence the temperature and clarity in the area closest to the mouth. Furthermore, being an open beach, there can be currents and small waves, making it less ideal for very inexperienced swimmers or young children without supervision. Still, the feeling of immersing oneself in these pure waters, with the sea breeze and the sound of the waves, is a truly revitalizing experience.

Services and Facilities

Despite its wild and natural character, Playa de Nas is not lacking in some essential services that complement the visitor's experience. We refer mainly to the chiringuitos and restaurants strategically located at the top of the cliff, just before the descent to the beach. These establishments, often run by local families, offer an excellent opportunity to taste Ikarian gastronomy, enjoy a refreshing drink, or simply contemplate the spectacular views as the sun sets.

Access to the beach is via a stepped path, and parking is available at the top of the hill, which is very convenient. However, it is essential to understand that, due to the philosophy of conserving its natural environment, Playa de Nas does not have the typical facilities of a more developed beach. We will not find showers, public toilets directly on the sand, lifeguards, or a municipal umbrella and sunbed rental service. This reinforces its appeal as a destination for those seeking a more authentic connection with nature. While some of the chiringuitos may offer their own umbrellas and chairs on their terraces, the beach itself is a virgin canvas where each person must bring what is necessary for their comfort. We therefore advise coming prepared with our own towel, sunscreen, and, if desired, a portable umbrella to shelter from the Ikarian sun.
