How to Get to Playa de Mononaftis

Getting to Playa de Mononaftis is relatively straightforward, especially if we are in the Heraklion region. Its proximity to the capital and main tourist centers makes it very accessible.

By Car

For us, the most comfortable and flexible option is always the car. From Heraklion, we take the national road E75 heading west towards Rethymno. After about 20-25 kilometers, we will find signs to turn off towards Agia Pelagia. Once in Agia Pelagia, the road to Mononaftis is well signposted. The total journey from Heraklion will take us approximately 25-35 minutes, depending on traffic. The beach has a nearby parking area, although in high season it can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early.

By Bus

If we prefer not to drive, we can opt for public transport. From the Heraklion bus station, there are regular services that take us to Agia Pelagia. Once in Agia Pelagia, Playa de Mononaftis is within walking distance (about 15-20 minutes on foot along a road with some slopes) or we can take a local taxi for a short ride. It is a more economical option, but requires a bit more planning and patience.

Other Options

We can also consider a taxi directly from Heraklion, which is more expensive but will drop us right at the beach. Another popular alternative in Crete is renting scooters or quads, which offers the freedom of a car with the agility of a smaller vehicle to explore the surroundings.

The Sand and Water
