World-famous for its prehistoric caves carved into the cliffs flanking the bay, which served as home to a hippie community in the 60s and 70s, Playa de Matala invites exploration and relaxation in equal measure. How to Get to Playa de Matala

Getting to Playa de Matala is relatively straightforward, although it requires a short road trip from Crete's main cities. We, starting from Heraklion, the island's capital, took the route south. The drive takes about an hour and twenty minutes, covering a distance of around 70 kilometers. The road is of good quality and offers typical Cretan landscapes, with olive groves and small villages dotting the way.

For those who prefer public transport, there are regular buses connecting Heraklion with Matala, especially during the peak summer season. Heraklion's bus station (Station A) offers several departures a day, and the bus journey is an economical and comfortable option to enjoy the scenery without worrying about parking. Once in the village of Matala, the beach is within walking distance, as the village center extends right behind the bay.

If your plan is to explore the island in its entirety, we recommend renting a car. This will give you the freedom to visit not only Matala but also other hidden treasures of the south coast and the interior of Crete, making your experience with the Heraklion (Crete) beaches much richer and more flexible. Parking in Matala is ample and well-signposted, although it can fill up during peak high-season times.

The Sand and Water

The experience at Playa de Matala begins with its distinctive sand and water features. We found the beach to be a charming mix of golden sand and fine pebbles, giving it a peculiar and pleasant feel underfoot. As you get closer to the water, the pebbles can be a bit more pronounced, so some visitors prefer to use water shoes, although they are not strictly necessary to enjoy a swim.

The water in Matala Bay is simply spectacular. We were amazed by its crystal clarity and tempting turquoise color, inviting you to dive in from the first moment. Being protected by the cliffs and the natural shape of the bay, the waters are usually calm, with little to no waves, making it an ideal spot for families with young children and for those seeking a relaxing swim. The water temperature is warm and pleasant during the summer months, perfect for cooling off under the Cretan sun.

Furthermore, the presence of rocks at the ends of the bay and near the caves creates small marine ecosystems that are perfect for snorkeling. We enjoyed exploring the underwater rock formations and observing the marine life. The cleanliness of the water is a testament to the Blue Flag that Playa de Matala proudly flies, guaranteeing high standards of quality and safety.

Playa de Matala is very well-equipped to ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay for all its visitors. We appreciated the variety of services we found available, making it an excellent option for a full day at the beach. Among the main facilities, we highlight:

• Sunbeds and umbrellas: Most of the beach is organized with areas where you can rent umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the sun without worries. Prices are usually reasonable for the full day.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Right behind the beach and along the seafront promenade of Matala village, you'll find a large number of chiringuitos, cafes, and restaurants. We enjoyed delicious coffees in the morning and authentic Cretan food for lunch and dinner, with spectacular views of the bay and the caves. The gastronomic offer is varied and of good quality.
• Showers and Toilets/WCs: There are public shower facilities to rinse off the salt and sand after swimming, as well as clean and well-maintained toilets, which is always a major plus at any beach.
• Lifeguard Services: During the high season, the beach has lifeguard services, adding an extra layer of safety, especially for families with children. We always value the presence of qualified personnel looking after the safety of swimmers.
• Parking: As mentioned earlier, there is a large paid parking lot right at the entrance to the village, very close to the beach, making access easy for those arriving by car.
