How to Get to Playa de Malia

Getting to Playa de Malia is quite straightforward, given its popularity and excellent connection with the rest of Crete. The most common way to access it is through Heraklion International Airport 'Nikos Kazantzakis' (HER), located about 30-35 kilometers to the west. From the airport, you have several options to reach your destination:

By Rental Car

We always recommend renting a car if you plan to explore the island. The road connecting Heraklion with Malia is the E75, a well-maintained coastal highway. The journey takes approximately 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic. This will give you the freedom to visit hidden coves and nearby villages at your own pace.

By Bus

There is a regular and efficient public bus service (KTEL) connecting Heraklion (both the city and the airport) with Malia. The buses are comfortable and the journey takes about 45-60 minutes. The stops in Malia are well signposted, and most hotels and the beach are within walking distance from these stops.

By Taxi or Private Transfer

For greater comfort, especially if traveling with a lot of luggage or in a group, you can opt for a taxi from the airport or book a private transfer. Although it is the most expensive option, it is the fastest and most direct way to get to your accommodation in Malia.

Once in Malia, the beach is easily accessible from any point in the town, either on foot if your hotel is nearby, or by a short car or taxi ride.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Malia welcomed us with an idyllic image: an extensive stretch of fine, golden sand that extends for several kilometers. It's the kind of sand that invites you to walk barefoot, build sandcastles with the kids, or simply lie down and feel its warmth. The ground type is predominantly sand, making it very comfortable for all ages.

As for the water, we were surprised by its transparency and turquoise blue hue. The waters of Playa de Malia are notably clean and calm, especially in the mornings. The entrance to the sea is gentle and shallow in many sections, making it a safe and pleasant place for swimming, even for the little ones. It's no wonder this Heraklion (Crete) beach has been awarded the Blue Flag on numerous occasions, a distinction that certifies the quality of its waters and services. Being able to dive into those crystal-clear waters was, without a doubt, one of the great pleasures of our visit to the Greece beaches.

• Sunbeds and Umbrellas: All along the beach, you will find numerous rental points for umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the sun without worries. Prices are usually reasonable for a full day.
• Beach Bars and Restaurants: The beach is dotted with lively beach bars where you can have a soft drink, an exotic cocktail, or a snack. Furthermore, there are numerous restaurants right on the beach or very close by, offering everything from fast food to traditional Greek dishes and international cuisine. The gastronomic offer is varied and caters to all tastes and budgets.
• Showers and Toilets/WCs: Essential for comfort, you will find freshwater showers and clean, well-maintained public toilets at various points along the beach, making the day easier, especially if you plan to spend many hours in the sea.
• Lifeguards: Safety is a priority at Playa de Malia beach. During the high season, there are lifeguard posts strategically distributed along the coast, ensuring the safety of swimmers. This gave us great peace of mind, especially seeing families with children enjoying the water.
• Parking: Although direct car access to the beach may be limited in some areas, there are several public parking areas (some paid, others free) nearby, facilitating access for those arriving by private vehicle.
• Equipment Rental and Sports Zone: For adventure lovers, the beach offers a wide range of water sports options. From jet skis and parasailing to banana boat rides, water skiing, and paddle surfing, there is something for everyone. You will also find areas dedicated to beach volleyball, adding an extra touch of fun and activity to your day.
