How to Get to Kali Limenes Beach

Getting to Kali Limenes Beach is an adventure in itself, part of the charm of this destination. We always say the journey is as important as the destination, and in this case, it's absolutely true! Situated on Crete's remote south coast, far from the bustling tourist areas, this gem requires a bit of effort to be discovered, but every kilometer traveled is worth it.

By Car: The Ideal Option

Undoubtedly, the most practical and recommended way to access Kali Limenes is by car. Renting a vehicle is almost essential if we wish to explore this part of the island at our own pace and enjoy the freedom it offers. From Heraklion, the capital and main entry point to Crete, the journey takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic and our skill on the local roads.

The route will take us through Crete's mountainous interior, crossing spectacular landscapes. We'll drive on well-maintained roads initially, then venture onto more winding and narrow paths as we approach the south coast. These roads, although sometimes challenging with their curves and slopes, offer impressive panoramic views of the Asterousia mountains and the Libyan Sea stretching endlessly before us. It's important to drive with caution, especially on blind curves, and be mindful of goats that often roam freely on the road. We strongly recommend enjoying the scenery and stopping at the lookout points to capture incredible photos of the beaches of Heraklion (Crete) and the natural surroundings.

Directions from Heraklion

From Heraklion, our ideal route would start by heading south, taking the road to Mires (Moires). This is a larger town in the Messara valley, which will serve as a reference point. Once in Mires, we must follow the signs towards the coast, specifically towards Kali Limenes. Signage can be a bit scarce in some more rural areas, so we always recommend having a good GPS or a detailed map on hand.

Public Transport: A Limited Alternative

While there is the KTEL bus network in Crete, getting to Kali Limenes by public transport is considerably more complicated and less flexible. There is no direct bus line that reaches the village. We could take a bus from Heraklion to Mires, but from there we would need to find a taxi or, with a lot of luck, local transport to take us the last few kilometers to the beach. This option is, in our experience, impractical if our goal is to spend the day or several days in Kali Limenes, as it will leave us very dependent on limited schedules and the availability of taxis in such a remote area.

For these reasons, we insist that a rental car is the best investment to fully enjoy Kali Limenes Beach and everything the south coast of Crete has to offer. The feeling of freedom when exploring its hidden coves and authentic villages is unmatched. Furthermore, it will allow us to comfortably bring everything needed for a beach day, from umbrellas and coolers to snorkeling gear. Get ready for an unforgettable journey!

This combination not only gives it a unique texture underfoot but also contributes to the astonishing transparency of the water. The pebbles act as a natural filter, preventing the sand from being excessively stirred up and keeping it crystal clear even on days of higher attendance, which is rare given its tranquil nature.
