How to Get to Playa de Ammoudara

Getting to Playa de Ammoudara is surprisingly straightforward, given its privileged location very close to the capital of Crete. For us travelers, ease of access is always a plus, and Ammoudara excels in this aspect.

From Heraklion City

If we are in the center of Heraklion, we have several options to get to the beach:

• Public Bus: It is, without a doubt, the most economical and frequent way. There are regular bus lines connecting downtown Heraklion with Ammoudara. Buses usually depart from the main bus station (near the port) or from designated stops in the city. The journey is short, generally about 15-20 minutes, and will leave us just steps from the sand.
• Taxi: For those who prefer comfort and speed, a taxi from Heraklion will take us to Ammoudara in approximately 10-15 minutes, depending on traffic. The cost is reasonable and is a good option if we are traveling with a lot of luggage or in a group.
• Rental Car: If we have chosen to rent a car to explore Crete, getting to Ammoudara is very easy. The beach is directly accessible from the main road heading west from Heraklion. There are numerous parking areas along the beach, some free and some paid, giving us flexibility to choose where to settle.

The airport is conveniently located about 12-15 kilometers from Ammoudara. We can take a taxi directly from the airport, which will take about 20-25 minutes. Another option is to take a bus from the airport to the Heraklion bus station and, from there, transfer to a bus bound for Ammoudara, although this is less direct if our final destination is the beach.

The excellent connectivity of the beach in Heraklion (Crete) means the transition from the airport or the city to the sand is smooth and hassle-free, allowing us to start enjoying our vacation almost immediately.

The Water

One of its most appreciated characteristics, especially by families, is its shallowness near the shore, which extends gradually. This makes it an extremely safe place for children to play and swim without worries, and for adults to enjoy a relaxing swim without big waves or strong currents.
