How to Get to Playa de Agiofarago

Getting to Playa de Agiofarago is part of the adventure, and this is precisely what makes it so special and less crowded than other beaches in Heraklion (Crete). There are two main ways to access this hidden paradise, and both offer a unique and memorable experience.

Hiking through the Agiofarago Gorge

This is, for us, the most rewarding option and the one that allows us to fully immerse ourselves in the mystical atmosphere of the place. The most common starting point for the hike is near the Odigitria Monastery. From there, we follow a dirt road to a small chapel dedicated to Agios Antonios, where there is usually a parking area (though space is limited and can be tricky in high season). This is where the hike truly begins.

The trail takes us through the impressive Agiofarago Gorge, a dry canyon that has been home to hermits for centuries. The hike is relatively easy but requires proper footwear and good physical condition. The journey takes approximately 30 to 50 minutes, depending on our pace. As we advance, the imposing cliffs rise on both sides, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring landscape. We encounter caves carved into the rock, some of which are still used by hermits, and a small church, the church of Agios Antonios, built inside a cave, which adds a spiritual touch to the journey. It is crucial to bring water, sun protection, and some food, as we will not find any services on the path or at the beach. The feeling of discovery at the end of the gorge, when Playa de Agiofarago reveals itself before our eyes, is indescribable.

By Boat

For those who prefer a more relaxed approach or are traveling with young children or people with reduced mobility, the option of arriving by boat is ideal. There are boat tours that depart from nearby ports such as Matala, Kali Limenes, or Agia Galini. These tours usually include stops at other remote beaches and caves along the coast, offering a different perspective of Cretan beauty.

The boat trip gives us the opportunity to admire the spectacular cliffs from the sea and to enjoy the turquoise waters even before setting foot on the sand. Although this option is more comfortable, we miss the experience of the hike through the gorge, which is, for many, an essential part of the visit to Playa de Agiofarago. However, it is an excellent alternative to enjoy this paradise without the physical effort of the hike. The Sand and Water

When we finally arrive at this remote enclave, the view that greets us is simply spectacular. The beach itself is not of fine, golden sand like some of the more famous beaches of Heraklion (Crete), but rather presents a charming mix of coarse sand and small pebbles. This characteristic gives it a very natural and wild appearance, which fits perfectly with the pristine environment of the gorge.

The beach floor is predominantly mixed, composed of these pebbles polished by the sea and the coarser sand mixed with them. This means it is advisable to wear proper footwear for walking on it, especially if our feet are sensitive. However, this composition has its advantages: the water remains incredibly clear, as sediments are not easily stirred up, and the pebbles act as a natural filter, maintaining the transparency we value so much.
