How to Get to Playa de Agia Pelagia

Getting to Playa de Agia Pelagia is relatively easy, thanks to its proximity to Heraklion and the good transport connections in Crete. If we fly into Heraklion International Airport (HER), which is the most common, we have several options to reach our coastal destination.

From Heraklion and the Airport

• By rental car: This is, without a doubt, the option we most recommend for exploring Crete with total freedom. From the airport or the centre of Heraklion, the journey takes approximately 20-25 minutes (about 20-25 kilometres) along the national E75 road, which runs along the coast. The signage to Agia Pelagia is clear, and once we leave the main road, the path leads us directly to the heart of the village and the beach. There are several car rental companies at the airport and in the city, and booking in advance usually guarantees better prices and availability, especially in high season.
• By public bus: For those who prefer public transport, there are regular buses connecting Heraklion with Agia Pelagia. Heraklion's central bus station (KTEL) offers frequent services during the day. The journey takes approximately 30-40 minutes and is an economical way to get there. Once in Agia Pelagia, the bus stop is conveniently located near the main beach, making it easy to access accommodation and the coast. It is an excellent option for getting to know the Heraklion (Crete) beaches like a local.
• By taxi or private transfer: If we are looking for comfort and speed, a taxi or private transfer from the airport or Heraklion is an excellent alternative. Although it is the most expensive option, it takes us directly to the door of our hotel or to the beach without any hassle. The price is usually fixed or agreed upon before starting the trip, and the journey takes about the same time as by private car.

Parking

Once in Agia Pelagia, finding parking can be a challenge in the summer months, as it is a popular destination. There are some public parking areas, often paid, near the beach and in the village streets. If we are staying in a hotel, they are likely to have their own parking. Our recommendation is to arrive early if we are travelling by car, or to consider public transport to avoid the stress of looking for a parking space, allowing us to fully enjoy Playa de Agia Pelagia.

The Sand and the Water

Playa de Agia Pelagia is famous for the quality of its sand and the clarity of its waters, two characteristics that make it such a sought-after destination in Crete. From the moment we set foot on the shore, we realise we are in a special place, a true Mediterranean paradise.

The Sand

The sand at Playa de Agia Pelagia is predominantly fine and of a beautiful golden colour. It is soft to the touch and very pleasant to walk on barefoot, making it perfect for relaxing in the sun or for children to play building sandcastles. Unlike other Cretan beaches that may have pebbles or rocks, here the ground type is mostly sand, offering a uniform and comfortable surface. This feature is especially valued by families and those seeking maximum comfort on the beach. In some areas, especially at the ends of the bay or in the adjacent small coves, we may find some mixture with smaller pebbles, but the main beach maintains its sandy profile.

The Water

The waters of Playa de Agia Pelagia are, without exaggeration, spectacular. Their transparency is astonishing, with shades ranging from pale turquoise near the shore to a deep blue offshore.
