How to Get to Playa de Zacharo

Getting to Playa de Zacharo is relatively straightforward, although as with many destinations in the Peloponnese, having your own or a rental vehicle will give us the greatest flexibility to explore the area at our own pace. The beach is located on the western coast of Elis, approximately 32 kilometers south of Pyrgos, the provincial capital, and about 60 kilometers north of Kalamata.

By Car

If we are traveling from Athens, the drive takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours, depending on traffic. We must take the E65/A7 highway towards Corinth and then continue towards Patras/Pyrgos. Once we approach the Elis region, we will follow the signs to Zacharo. The roads are generally in good condition, and the accompanying landscape is a mix of olive groves, vineyards, and small villages that immerse us in authentic rural Greece. We highly recommend renting a car from Athens Airport (ATH) or from Kalamata (KLX) to maximize our experience and be able to take excursions to the surroundings without limitations.

By Bus

For those who prefer public transport, it is possible to arrive by bus. The KTEL bus company operates regular routes from Athens (Kifissos Bus Station) to Pyrgos, and from Pyrgos there are local connections to Zacharo. The bus journey is longer, around 4 to 5 hours from Athens to Pyrgos, and then an additional 30-40 minutes to Zacharo. While it is a more economical option, the frequency of local buses can be limited, so it is crucial to plan schedules in advance, especially if we are traveling outside the high season. The Zacharo bus station is located in the center of the village, a short distance from the beach.

Nearby Airports

The most convenient airports for reaching Playa de Zacharo are Kalamata International Airport 'Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos' (KLX), which is approximately 70 kilometers to the south, and Araxos Airport (GPA) near Patras, about 100 kilometers to the north. Both airports receive charter and seasonal flights from various European cities. The largest airport with the most connections is Athens International Airport 'Eleftherios Venizelos' (ATH), but it involves the car or bus journey mentioned above. From Kalamata or Araxos, we can rent a car or take a taxi to reach our destination in less than an hour and a half.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Zacharo is famous for its sand, and with good reason. We are faced with a beach of fine, soft sand, of a golden color that shines under the Greek sun. It is the kind of sand that slips through your fingers, perfect for building sandcastles with children, for taking long barefoot walks, or simply for laying out our towel and feeling its pleasant texture. There are no rocks or pebbles to bother us, making it a very comfortable place for all ages. Its expanse is such that, even on the busiest days, we will always find a quiet corner to enjoy our own piece of paradise.

The waters of the Ionian Sea that bathe Playa de Zacharo are another of its great attractions. They are remarkably crystal-clear and of a turquoise blue that invites a swim. The depth is gradual, making it ideal for the little ones and for those who are not comfortable in deep water. We can wade in several meters and the water will still be up to our waist, allowing for a safe and relaxing swim. The water temperature in the summer months is warm and very pleasant, perfect for cooling off from the heat of the sun. The transparency of the water allows us to easily see the sandy bottom, which adds a feeling of cleanliness and purity.
