Introduction
If there is a place in the world that we would describe as a true hidden gem, a corner where nature gifts us an open-air spa, that is undoubtedly Playa de Therma (Aguas termales) on the beautiful island of Kos, Greece. We are not talking about just any beach; this is a destination that promises a completely different experience, one that combines the freshness of the Aegean Sea with the comforting warmth of volcanic springs. From the moment one sets foot on this cove, the feeling of being in a special place is undeniable. The warm waters that spring from the depths of the earth meet the sea waves, creating a natural wellness pool that invites deep relaxation and total disconnection.
Our first visit to Playa de Therma was a revelation. We had heard about its healing properties and unique atmosphere, but nothing prepared us for the magic of feeling the contrast between the warm water and the sea air. It is a place where time seems to stand still, where stress dissolves with every immersion. For us, it is the epitome of tranquility and a testament to the incredible diversity offered by the beaches of Kos. If you are looking for an experience that goes beyond simple sun and sand, if you yearn for a moment of peace and rejuvenation, then this is certainly the destination you must add to your list of must-sees on your travels to the beaches of Greece.
How to get to Playa de Therma (Aguas termales)
Getting to Playa de Therma (Aguas termales) is part of the adventure, although quite simple from the capital, Kos. We always recommend renting a car or a motorbike for total freedom, especially if you plan to explore beyond the beach. From the city of Kos, the journey is approximately 12 kilometers to the east, following the coastal road. The route is scenic, with views of the Aegean Sea that already prepare us for what awaits.
Transport options
- Rental car or motorbike: This is the most flexible option. The road is well signposted and there is a free Parking area, although it can sometimes fill up in high season. From the parking lot, there is a short but steep path of about 100-200 meters that descends to the beach. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes for this section.
- Public bus: There is a bus line that departs from Cos Town station and arrives at a stop near Playa de Therma. It is an economical and reliable option. From the stop, the walk to the beach is the same descending path.
- Taxi: For those who prefer comfort, a taxi from Cos Town will drop you off directly at the beach parking lot. It is a good option if you are traveling in a group and want to avoid the stress of driving.
The sand and the water
Playa de Therma (Aguas termales) is not the typical fine, golden sand beach that perhaps comes to mind when thinking of the beaches of Kos. Here, the type of sand is more mixed, with a combination of dark pebbles and volcanic sand. The type of ground is predominantly mixed, with rocky areas, especially on the edges of the cove and in the area where the thermal waters spring. This characteristic dark ground is a constant reminder of the underground volcanic activity that gives life to this unique place.
But what really defines this beach is, of course, the water. The Aegean Sea here is crystal clear and, in most of the cove, has a pleasant temperature. However, the real attraction lies in the natural pool that forms at the easternmost end of the beach. Here, the thermal waters, rich in minerals such as sulfur, potassium, sodium, and calcium, spring at a temperature that can reach 40-50°C. These waters mix with the cooler seawater within a small pool delimited by rocks, allowing us to find the exact temperature point that we like best. It is an incredible sensation: the contrast of the skin with the cold seawater and, a few meters away, immersion in a warm, therapeutic bath. It is an experience that, without a doubt, has left an indelible mark on us and that we recommend to everyone who visits the beach of Kos.
Services and facilities
Although Playa de Therma (Aguas termales) is a natural and relatively pristine place, it has the basic services that we consider essential for a comfortable visit. Let's not expect a luxury resort, but rather a simple infrastructure that complements its wild character.
Available services:
- Parking: As we already mentioned, there is a free parking area at the top of the path that descends to the beach. Although it can fill up in high season, we have always found a spot, even if it sometimes requires a bit of patience.
- Sunbeds and umbrellas: On the beach, especially during the summer months, we often find a small stand or a local that rents Sunbeds and umbrellas for a reasonable price. This allows us to enjoy the sun and the heat without worrying about bringing our own equipment.
- Chiringuitos: There is no large restaurant on the beach, but there is a very basic Chiringuito or a canteen that offers cold drinks, snacks, ice cream, and some light meals. It is perfect for refreshing yourself or having a bite after a dip in the thermal baths. We always appreciate having the option of a cold beer or a Greek coffee in such a relaxing setting.
