Its golden sands, caressed by the gentle waves of the Aegean Sea, create a perfect contrast with the deep blue of the sky and the shallow waters, ideal for a refreshing swim. It's a place where time seems to slow down, inviting us to disconnect from the daily hustle and immerse ourselves in the peace that only nature can offer. With its prestigious Blue Flag, certifying the quality of its waters and services, Marmari is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding Kos beaches and a must-visit on any trip to the beaches of Greece.
How to Get to Playa de Marmari
Getting to Playa de Marmari is relatively straightforward, making it an accessible destination for all types of travelers. The island of Kos has its own international airport, Kos International Airport 'Hippocrates' (KGS), which receives direct flights from various European cities, especially during the high season. Once at the airport, Marmari is about 15 kilometers away, meaning a short and comfortable journey.
We have several options to get to the beach from the airport or from Kos Town:
- By rental car: This is undoubtedly the option we most recommend if we wish to explore the island at our own pace. There are numerous car rental agencies both at the airport and in Kos Town. The journey to Marmari is direct and well-signposted, following the north coast road. It gives us the freedom to visit hidden coves and picturesque villages as we please.
- By bus: The public bus network on Kos is quite efficient, especially between the main towns and beaches. There are regular buses connecting Kos Town with Marmari, and also routes that pass by the airport. It's an economical and reliable option, although the schedules may be less flexible than with your own car.
- By taxi: Taxis are available at the airport and at the main stops in Kos Town. It's a comfortable and quick way to reach our destination, ideal if we're traveling with luggage or if we prefer the comfort of a direct transfer. The cost is reasonable, especially if we share the ride.
- By bicycle: For the more adventurous and exercise-loving, the route from Kos Town to Marmari is quite flat and offers pleasant scenery, making it a popular option for a bike ride. There are many places to rent bicycles on the island.
The Sand and Water
What impresses us most about Playa de Marmari is the quality of its sand and the clarity of its waters. The sand here is fine, with a soft golden hue that invites walking barefoot. It's incredibly soft underfoot, perfect for building sandcastles with the kids or simply for lying back and enjoying the sun. The predominant ground type is, as expected, sand, which guarantees a gradual and comfortable entry into the sea, without rocks or pebbles to cause discomfort.
The Aegean waters at Marmari are exceptionally crystal-clear and shallow for many meters from the shore. This characteristic makes it ideal for families with young children, who can splash and play in complete safety. We ourselves enjoyed the feeling of walking out into the sea while the water barely covered our knees. The water temperature is generally warm, especially from June to September, making swimming an extremely pleasant experience. The cleanliness of these waters is, in fact, one of the reasons the beach holds the Blue Flag, an international recognition for the environmental quality and services of beaches.
The water's transparency also makes it attractive for snorkeling in the calmer areas, although we shouldn't expect spectacular coral reefs, we can observe small fish and local marine life. The gentle waves, often brought by the sea breeze, are perfect for relaxation and for those who enjoy a calm swim, without worrying about strong currents.
