How to Get to Playa de Maleme

Getting to Playa de Maleme is relatively straightforward, which adds an extra point to its appeal. We are located about 16-18 kilometers west of the city of Chania, the capital of the province. The transportation options are varied and adapt to different preferences and budgets, allowing us to easily integrate this destination into our itinerary for the beaches of Crete.

By Rental Car

For us, the most comfortable and flexible option is always a rental car. It gives us the freedom to explore the island at our own pace, stopping at any cove or picturesque village that catches our eye. From Chania Airport (CHQ), the journey to Maleme is approximately 30-40 minutes, following the national road E75 heading west. The signs are clear and the road is in good condition. Once in Maleme, we will find parking areas, often free, near the beach, especially in the more organized sections with chiringuitos and tavernas.

By Bus

If we prefer a more economical and carefree option, the public bus is an excellent alternative. The KTEL Chania-Rethymnon bus company operates regular and frequent routes from the central bus station in Chania to Maleme and other villages on the west coast, such as Platanias and Agia Marina. The buses are modern, with air conditioning, and the journey takes about 25-30 minutes. It's a fantastic way to mingle with the locals and enjoy the scenery without worrying about driving or parking. The stops are well signposted and are usually conveniently located near the main points of interest in Maleme.

By Taxi or Private Transfer

For those seeking maximum comfort, especially if traveling with a lot of luggage or in a group, a taxi or private transfer from the airport or the city of Chania is a viable option. Although more expensive, it ensures a direct, no-wait trip to the door of our accommodation in Maleme. Prices are fixed and can be agreed upon in advance, which avoids unpleasant surprises.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Maleme, it is crucial to highlight its geological characteristics that make it unique. Let's not expect to find the fine, golden sand we often imagine from Caribbean beaches; here we immerse ourselves in a different, but equally rewarding, experience. We are faced with a beach of coarse sand mixed with pebbles of various sizes. This combination gives it a rustic and natural character, and although it may feel a little less comfortable under bare feet at first, we quickly get used to it and appreciate its particular charm.

The pebbles polished by the sea add an aesthetic touch and a characteristic sound when the waves gently break on the shore. We recommend bringing sandals or water shoes, especially if we plan long walks along the shore or if we are sensitive to rougher textures. However, once we enter the water, the sensation changes completely.

The waters of Playa de Maleme are simply spectacular. Their transparency is astonishing, allowing us to see the seabed easily, even at several meters depth. The color ranges from a light turquoise in the shallower areas to an intense blue in the open sea. This clarity is an indicator of the purity of its waters, a quality that has been recognized with the prestigious Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies the environmental quality and safety of the beach.

In addition to its transparency, the waters are usually calm, with moderate waves that make them perfect for swimming and relaxing. The entry into the sea is gradual in most areas, making it a safe choice for children and for those who are not comfortable with abrupt drops. We have enjoyed long swims in these waters, feeling the Cretan sun caress our skin and the gentle movement of the sea rock us. The water temperature, especially during the summer months (from June to September), is warm and very pleasant, inviting us to spend hours immersed in its refreshing embrace.
