Introduction
If there is one place in Crete that embodies virgin beauty and the untamed spirit of Mediterranean nature, it is undoubtedly Playa de Kedrodasos. Located on the remote southwestern coast of the island, a few kilometers from the world-famous Elafonisi, Kedrodasos emerges as a sanctuary of tranquility, an authentic paradise for those seeking to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in a pristine landscape. We, as lovers of beach tourism, have explored many corners, but few have captivated us as much as this unique enclave, where ancient cedars meet white sands and waters of an unreal turquoise. It is a place that invites us to disconnect completely, to breathe pure air, and to reconnect with the essentials.
Often, when we think of the beaches of Chania (Crete), our minds go directly to the postcards of Elafonisi with its pink sand. However, Kedrodasos, whose name means 'cedar forest', offers an equally impressive alternative, though with a much wilder and more authentic character. Here, human intervention is minimal, allowing us to experience the Cretan coast in its purest state. We are faced with a hidden gem, a natural treasure that, despite its growing popularity, has managed to preserve its original charm, offering us a different, more intimate, and environmentally respectful beach experience.
For us, visiting Playa de Kedrodasos is not just a trip to a destination; it is an immersion in a unique ecosystem. The cedars, some with sculptural shapes molded by the wind, offer natural shade and an intoxicating aroma that mixes with the sea breeze. The waters, surprisingly clear and calm, invite long swims and exploration of their underwater life. It is a place where every corner looks like a postcard, where time stands still, and where natural beauty manifests itself to the fullest, promising moments of pure serenity and awe.
How to Get to Playa de Kedrodasos
Getting to Playa de Kedrodasos is part of the adventure and what contributes to its wild and less crowded character. It is not a destination easily accessible by public transport, making it an ideal place for those who value exploration and the reward of effort. We always recommend renting a car to explore Crete, and for Kedrodasos, this recommendation is even stronger. From Chania, the drive takes approximately an hour and a half to two hours, following the coastal road to the southwest.
Driving Route
The most common route is to head towards Elafonisi. Before reaching the famous pink beach, you will see signs (or the lack thereof, which adds to the charm) for a turnoff to Kedrodasos. The last part of the road is a dirt track, which can be a bit rough and rocky. We advise driving with caution, especially if your rental car is not an SUV. It is passable for most vehicles, but do not expect impeccable asphalt.
The Final Stretch on Foot
Once you reach the improvised parking area (a dirt space where people leave their cars), the final access to the beach is on foot. It is a walk of about 10 to 20 minutes along a well-marked, though somewhat rocky and gently sloping, path. This walk, which passes through the unique cedar forest, is in itself a charming experience. Be sure to wear comfortable and suitable walking shoes, as well as water and any other provisions you may need, since, as we will see, services on the beach are practically non-existent. The reward at the end of the path, with the view of the turquoise waters and cedars, is worth every step.
The Sand and Water
What captivates us most about Playa de Kedrodasos is, without a doubt, the quality of its sand and the clarity of its waters. Here, the sand is predominantly fine and of a creamy white color, dotted in some spots with small shells and fragments of coral that give it a natural and virgin touch. Unlike other Cretan beaches where stones or pebbles abound, in Kedrodasos the ground type is mostly sand, making it extremely pleasant for walking barefoot and spreading out a towel.
A Dreamlike Sea
The waters are the real spectacle. Of a hypnotic turquoise and light blue color, they are incredibly crystalline, allowing you to see the seabed easily even at several meters depth. This clarity is perfect for snorkeling, inviting us to explore the modest marine life that inhabits among the rocks and seagrass meadows. The shore is usually shallow, making it very safe for swimming and relaxing. Furthermore, being sheltered by the geography of the coast and the cedar forest itself, the waters are usually calm, with few waves, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere ideal for a beach day.
Services and Facilities
For us, one of the great virtues of Playa de Kedrodasos is precisely its pristine character and the almost total absence of mass tourist infrastructure. If you are looking for a beach with showers, lifeguards, trendy chiringuitos, or organized sunbeds, Kedrodasos is not your place. And that is precisely why we love it.
