However, Afrata offers a different, more intimate and authentic experience. Here, luxury doesn't reside in ostentatious comforts, but in the simplicity of its natural beauty: the gentle murmur of waves breaking on the pebbles, the scent of salt mixed with that of nearby olive trees, and the feeling of being in a secluded corner of the world. How to Get to Playa de Afrata

Getting to Playa de Afrata is part of the adventure and charm of this place. Its location, slightly off the main routes, is what helps maintain its semi-wild and less crowded character. Located on the Rodopou peninsula, west of Chania, it is mainly accessible by car, giving us the flexibility to explore the surroundings at our own pace. From the vibrant city of Chania, the journey takes approximately 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic and the exact route chosen, and each kilometer brings us closer to the tranquility we seek.

By Car

The most common and recommended route is to take the national road E65 heading west, towards Kissamos. We must watch for the exit indicating Kolymbari. Once in Kolymbari, the road to Afrata becomes more rural and picturesque, winding through charming small villages, fields of ancient olive trees, and landscapes that remind us of Crete's rich agricultural heritage. The signs pointing towards the small village of Afrata are discreet, but they exist. Once we reach the village, a descending, narrow, and winding road will take us directly to the beach. This last stretch may require a bit of caution, but the panoramic views of the Aegean Sea more than compensate for any difficulty. The parking is not formal or organized with marked lines, but there is enough space along the road or in a small clearing at the end of the path to leave the vehicle without a problem, especially outside the high season. We always recommend parking considerately so as not to obstruct the passage.

Public Transport and Other Options

Direct public transport to Playa de Afrata is practically non-existent. While there are regular buses connecting Chania with Kolymbari, from Kolymbari to the beach there is no bus service that goes all the way. This means that to access Afrata, the best option is to rent a car, a motorbike, or, failing that, take a taxi from Kolymbari. We always recommend renting a vehicle in Crete to have the freedom to explore these hidden corners at our own pace and discover other wonders of the beaches in Chania (Crete). Another option, for the more adventurous, could be to cycle from Kolymbari, although the last downhill stretch involves a considerable climb on the return. Whatever the method, the journey to Afrata is an integral part of its charm, preparing us for the peace and beauty that await.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive and captivating aspects of Playa de Afrata is its composition and the quality of its waters. Unlike the extensive fine-sand beaches found in other parts of Crete, Afrata is a pebble beach with small stones, which gives it a unique character and, for us, a very attractive one. The pebbles, polished by the constant ebb and flow of the waves over centuries, vary in size and color, creating a natural mosaic under our feet. They are pleasant to the touch and give the landscape a particular texture and a characteristic sound when the waves drag them, a soft murmur that becomes the soundtrack of our visit.
